Okay, I went and saw Big Fish tonight...
Edited on Sat Jan-24-04 10:32 PM by MrsGrumpy
and my eyes are killing me from sobbing so much. It is a really good movie...for some. I will say my husband didn't "get it". The kids thought it was hilarious, but me--it really hit me. So tomorrow I'm going to go visit my dad.

:hi: Laura

P.S. The other thing that was a little bothersome was watching Jessica Lange play an older woman role. It was sad to see the changing of the guard per se.

1. So is it a "chick flick"? No offense to the chicks out there...

3. I wouldn't say "chick flick"
The movie was decent at best. I agree with the starter thread and how it could "hit" some people in sensitive spots. It could've been a lot better. Good acting and a good script but to me it was a Forrest Gump rip off and I didn't like FG.

6. Yes, there was a lot of Forrest Gumpishness about it.
I said that to my husband as we were watching it...although, he liked Forrest Gump.

4. No, I don't think so. The guy behind us said it was great. I just think
it's a "thinking person's" movie. My husband is more of a "spell it out, I don't want to have to think about it" kind of guy. 3/4 of the theater was sobbing along with me. If you have/had a rough relationship with your dad, this is a great movie. :hi:

12. It reminded me a lot of my husband's relationship with his father
so I was a little bummed that he didn't like it. :(

7. It's so sad, I was trying to explain to the girls that when I was their
age she was the "Jennifer Aniston/Kate Hudson" type star. Of course, they just stared at me blankly....sigh.

8. A little trivia about Albert Finney and Alabama
in an interview, he said he thought he was going to the sunny South to film Big Fish. So he packed lightweight clothing...linen trousers, etc. He got there and it was cold. He went to the local Wal-Mart and stocked up on warm pants.
We liked the movie. Whimsical, sweet, and different from the usual Hollywood "things blow up real good junk."

14. What I liked about it, and what I didn't (SPOILER)
What I liked:

Fictions are a way to hack, or endure, living - and dying. The aesthetic, in other words, has a real function; the fabulous isn't just notable in itself - it is notable for the role it performs.

What I didn't like:

Fictions make you "immortal." The closing lines of the movie were cliched and didn't comport with the more challenging thesis, stated above. At the end of the day, it is not about the survival of the self - the immortality one accrues - but about working with and living in the self's dissolution. The movie was excellent at portraying the latter, so it's too bad it had to end on the former.
