Sleet, snow and freezing rain, oh my!
We are having a THOROUGHLY nasty weather day here in central IL--- freezing rain, snow and sleet combined. My police radio is absolutely alive with accident calls, and it's starting to get WORSE. I am soooooooo happy not to be working today. :)

Edit: Just started snowing!

and northern Illinois. I would drive for an Illinois DU meet-up. I don't think there are many in Springfield (if any). It would be cool to find a central location for those of us spread out around the state.

I was born and raised in El Dorado, KS and lived in Wichita from 1987-2000. I have the Kansas flag as my avatar because I love it and the state motto ("Ad Astra Per Aspera," "To the stars through difficulties") and miss my home!

34. I know
I love the Flint Hills. My sister has lived in the Bay Area since 1968 and still calls Kansas home. She loves western Kansas, which most people don't. I think the whole state is gorgeous in its own way. I miss the plains and being able to see the horizon. I'm in law school in Pittsburgh and am very happy there, but Kansas will always be home.

BTW, I changed my avatar because I decided I needed to demonstrate my support for Dean (although Kucinich is my second choice).

36. I'm glad you had the
Kansas flag up long enough for me to see it and to get to know you a bit. Flint Hills anytime but especially in the spring after the burn! Beautiful! I also love the long distance sky of Western Kansas, well, most of Kansas to some extent. I'm glad you are happy where you are. Good luck in law school.

12. Here in NE Kansas as well.
Everything is covered with a thin coat of ice, thankfully it is thin so far. I just got back from the farm and the temp is holding here between 30 and 32 so it is now just raining. As the temp drops it is gonna be nasty as the roads are covered with standing water now. Looks like about 1/4 inch of ice now with about that much more expected before the snow starts later. Be careful out there! I just got a call, my rehearsal was cancelled for tonight, AHHHH I can relax now.

Expected to switch to freezing rain in a while. They're expecting power outages. :scared: :scared:

But so far, its a no show. Here in central VA, we are supposed to get the snow, sleet, freezing rain mess, but so far nothing but cold. If it gets here much later, it'll only be snow. Which is good, I can drive in snow, but the ice crap is another story.

is supposed to get it worse than here. That's what I heard last night and this AM anyway. Let me go check the weather map.

edit:

Central NC Forcast:

Sunday: Snow likely with a gradual changeover to sleet and freezing rain this afternoon. Highs in the mid-upper 20s. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through midnight. We anticipate a serious blow from an ice storm which will last through tonight. The northern counties will likely see a 3-5" mixture of snow and sleet. For the Triangle area at least a 1-2" mixture of snow and sleet with a .25" ice buildup. Areas south and southeast of the Triangle could see as much as .25" ice buildup. Be prepared for power outages and freezing temperatures through tomorrow morning.

20. Yep, same one coming to us in Southern Maryland
Our alert:

"Snow Will Begin Late This Afternoon And Early This Evening Across The Central Shenandoah Valley...Foothills And Southern Maryland. Snow May Be Heavy At Times Late This Evening. The Snow Is Expected To Mix With Or Change To Sleet Around Midnight. The Steady Precipitation Is Expected To Taper Off Early Monday Morning. Accumulation Of Snow And Sleet Is Expected To Range From 4 To 8 Inches."

GOD I hope I can get out tomorrow morning. My boss, bless her, can be a whistling bitch if I don't make it in on snowy days, even when "liberal leave" is called for. She grew up in NY, western NY, I think, and snow that I can't drive in makes her scoff.

I'm in Waldorf. I've always wanted to live in a ritzy hotel salad. (???)

I'll get up around 4:00 AM, see what the gov't web site says about liberal leave or federal offices closed. Not holding my breath, though. Then I'll go out & see how deep/icy it is.

If I can't go in, I'll hunker down and make The Call, and ride out that storm. Wonder if it'd help if I emailed her a photo of my street. They don't get out here w/ the plow 'til well into the afternoon. We're in the boonies.

21. Not good here in North Georgia either.
Lots of rain and the temperature is dropping, which could cause ice on the roads tomorrow. Here in North Georgia, we are not equipped for heavy winter conditions. So if there is ice on some roads, you just have to be very careful driving.

I had an experience a few years back, where I hit a patch of black ice and skidded. I was able to stop, but the guy behind me couldn't and smashed into me. I was lucky that I was not injured, but the rear end of my car really took a beating. Fortunately, the other guy's insurance company paid for all repairs.

46. I'm also a rural Central IL DUer!
Just east and north of Champaign-Urbana. Look for Ogden on the map and go north a bit!

I've tried a time or two to get a Downstate IL meet up put together--there are more of us than you might think on here! I will happily drive to just about anyplace to meet fellow DU folks... It is always fun!

A couple years ago, I hosted the FIRST ever DU meetup (excluding protests!) for just social purposes. At that time DU was a lot smaller, but Central Illinois has a great tradition here at DU for stating the trends. ;)

Pax to you, and we do need to get it put together!

Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 03:56 PM by kayell
I had really hoped to see a few inches of nice ornamental white stuff here this winter. Instead of snow, it looks like I'll be seeing several inches of accumulated sleet and ice - not even slightly ornamental. And I'll probably lose my power tonight, just like last year, and the year before... I hate ice storms!

44. I got to drive to work today at 4:30 AM
The roads were just a glaze of ice in my part of town. They got better the closer I got to work, but the police had closed several of the main routes due to accidents and icy overpasses. Nothing like having to find other routes at that time of the morning during an ice storm. Needless to say, I took tomorrow off. We're expecting snow tomorrow and I just can't face another drive like today.
