6. Wow! That was high!
Try ten cents and two cents per carton for extra milk. We even had chocolate available. It was a small rural elementary school and the lunch ladies cooked for farmers' kids. We could always get seconds. It wasn't standard institutional stuff either. It was home cooking kind of stuff.

11. Mine went from 25 to 35 cents in elementary school
Late '60s thru early '70s in Miami.

I was already a handicapper and accomplished wheeler-dealer. We made year-long trades at our table: some kids didn't like corn so whenever corn was served I would get it, as long as I gave them my grilled cheese every time, for example.

5. And I remember when
they actually cooked real food in the cafeterias. I had the good fortune to go to two different schools (upstate NY and Tucson, AZ) that had good food in the cafeterias.

8. Ah...culinary memories...
From Howards Grove, Wisconsin...

The legendary "pizzaburger."

Half a bun, with ground meat cooked up and tomato soup added.
an inch square of American cheese in the center.

9. 1958-1964
In Houston the elementary school cafeteria had the very best rolls I've ever had. They also had the best sloppy joes too. I've tried to recreate the sloppy joes but haven't been able to. I've even tried the canned sauces but they have a sweet taste that the cafeteria sloppy joes never had.

10. Lunch
Elementary lunch $0.25 extra milk $0.02. High School Lunch $0.35 extra milk (it came in a bottle!) ranged from $0.03 to $0.15. I bought lunch every day for 12 years.

I have worked in schools for almost 20 years and have yet to buy. The cost has gone through the roof. Have a PBJ almost every day.

Here are some menus from where I work now.
