First of all, I'm extremely pleased for what appears to be at least some breadth in the nominations, with no reliance merely on commercial success or familiarity to American audiences.

Secondly, Sofia Coppola has managed a rare feat for a female working in Hollywood, helming a motion picture AND getting several nominations for it (for herself and her actors).

Thirdly, I was heartened by some of the choices in acting nominations (Johnny Depp, Patricia Clarkson).

May the best people win! (Okay, I know all the best people can't win. But let WORTHY people win, and it wouldn't hurt if they're gracious).

Oh, and color me THRILLED that Tom Cruise wasn't

The lack of Scarlett nominations was a clear oversight made by the studios that released LiT and GwPE. Focus didn't know whether to campaign for Scarlett in LiT as supporting or leading, and she subsequently probably had her vote split. Further, her vote was probably split by being in both LiT and GwPE.

It's clear though, that her oversight wasn't a 'fuck you' like it was to Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.

for American Splendor, for writing or acting. Pretty much everyone who's seen it was blown away by Hope Davis and Paul Giamatti.

I'm overjoyed that Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Whale Rider. There was talk of nominating her for supporting, which was nonsense; she carries that whole movie, and does an astonishing job for someone so young and with so little experience. I absolutely believed her as that character, every word and every motion. I doubt highly that she'll win, but I'm still delighted by the nomination.

I wish Return of the King, Seabiscuit, Master and Commander, and Mystic River weren't all the same year. All four are excellent movies, and all deserve recognition. Of the four, though, there's no question in my mind which is the most crowning achievement. Peter Jackson, clear another couple spaces on your mantel.

I am very happy that "A Mighty Wind"'s "Kiss" was nominated for best song, and it really should win: it's beautiful, touching, and IT'S ACTUALLY PLAYED DURING THE MOVIE, which I think should really be required for best song.

And as for what I'm disappointed about? I would liked to have seen Elijah Wood and Sean Astin nominated for best actor and supporting actor for LOTR:ROTK. Not that they would win, or would necisarily deserve to win, but I really believe their performances were worthy of recognition in a nomination, Astin especially.
