This weekend, my partner and I went to NYC to take a friend of ours who is going through a rough time to two Broadway shows, Avenue Q, and Wicked. I loved them both, but I was stunned, simply stunned at Wicked.
Quickly, the story is about what happened in Oz before Dorothy dropped in. It is about the relationship between Glinda the "good" witch and Elphaba, the "wicked" witch of the West.
In modern storytelling, few stories paint the differences between good and evil as starkly and plainly as "The Wizard of Oz": Glinda, Dorothy and the Wizard are good, while the Wicked witch of the West is bad. But Wicked is the story behind the story, and brings the simple tale of our childhood into a totally new perspective, where nothing and no one is what we thought they were.
I found it also a very telling commentary on our own current society where foreign policy is painted in stark terms of good and evil, when the reality is much more complicated than others would have us believe. A poigniant story coupled with a phenomenal score by Steven Schwartz, and performed beautifully by Kristen Chenoweth (Tony winner for Your a Good Man Charlie Brown) as the funny, arrogant, rich, spoiled, and ultimately endearing Glinda, and Idina Menzel (Tony nominee for Rent, and Mrs Taye Diggs) as the persecuted and big hearted Elphaba, I highly recommend Wicked if you are in or visiting the NYC area. It is well worth the ticket price. The show is a huge success, so order tickets in advance.
We saw Peter Gallagher there that night.
Here is the website where you can here clips of the music, see pictures of the cast and the set, as well as order tickets.
