By the time Nader's book came out, Chevy had pretty well much fixed the handling problems that plagued the Older Corvairs. The problem is, because of nader's book, people didn't realize his.

That live rear axel was fun, but you had to know how to drive with it. A buddy of mine had it perfected in his. Cornered on rails, but very close to the edge, if you know what I mean.

A guy I was dating many, many years ago decided to test-drive an XKE convertible. Well, we were on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami and it started to rain. Well, we might as well have driving with the top down because the rain came right through the roof. Needless to say, he did not buy that car.

You made me think of the car out in the garage. I keep putting off the restoration of my '71 340 Dart. It's a beaut with a perfect body, but needs front-end work and new gaskets all over the engine. The red poly paint is not original, the guy that owned it a decade ago changed the paint from Hemi Orange to a "Fire engine" red. It has twin factory scoops on the hood and a bumble bee stripe on the rear with ralley rims and chrome tipped dual exhaust. It's a 340 4bbl, 727 automatic with the 8 3/4 rear end.
I've always loved the Darts since my first car, a 65 slant six.

34. I stared at my project in the driveway too.

I had a '66 Chevy Impala, 396 and factory a/c. I swear you could see the gas needle nosedive when you punched it.

But, it needed FAR too much work that my limited knowledge and budget could handle so I sold it. The guy who bought it probably just wanted the engine and the centerline wheels (which were on it when I bought it).

It COULD have been a great cruiser. :-(

I WILL get that car on the road one day.
Parts are still available, I just need to find the time to rebuild the engine and it's good to go. It's garaged so it will keep.
Soon I would bet because my current car(85 Celica) has just about rusted into a pile of dirt. It runs great but it's become quite the eye-sore.
I wish I could put the handling of that Celica into the Dart somehow.

48. What did we do w/o power

Yeah, my first one was manual steering and an
unsynchronized 3 speed and manual brakes. You had to be moving in order to turn the steering wheel and you couldn't be moving if you wanted to shift into 1st or reverse and you couldn't stop moving without standing on the brakes.I can remember tugging that wheel around to park. It was like weight lifting.

It still took the length of a football field to stop from a decent speed. I had power steering too. Apparently, mine had just about every option Chevy offered in 1966. I can't imagine having to crank that bigass steering wheel with no power.

My first car, a 1980 Datsun, had no power steering an it was bad enough...

55. I can't own just one

I'm a born collector, I've always tended to keep things. Went from collecting small things, like comic books, to now collecting big things, like cars and trucks.

I have:

A 1949 DeSoto Deluxe, it is the ultimate gangster car, long and black, with suicide doors and oval back window. I even keep an old violin case in the rear window just for effect. It's ride is like taking your living room couch out for a spin. Has 49,000 in the odometer

A 1951 Chevy 3600 3/4 ton PU truck. A great old truck, has a Powers utility bed. I'm thinking of getting a small tow boom to put in the back. Though it has 100,000 on the odometer, it is still a great truck, runs well. It's great for those days when you know traffic is going to be out to kill you, because nobody, but nobody wants to hit old iron.

1967 Ford LTD, the Galaxy for Grandma and Grandpa. This was my grandparents car, and with 50,000 miles on it, she still purrs. With a 399 engine, this pup was an upscale dragster. All that power went to waste until I started driving, but now I just baby her along.

1973 VW Kombi van: A great van to go camping in, and whatever else. I've upgraded the engine from a 1700 cc to a 2000 cc to help out on the hills. Love to drive this in deep snow, whistling merrily as my 2WD VW zips past all of those 4WD SUVs off in a ditch.

1987 Chevy Nova. Not a classic yet, but this is one car I can't get rid of, my wife and I first went out in this car, and it has a lot of great memories. Though at 200,000+ miles she has been retired from the daily commute, I still take her out and about to exercise her.

The two cars I would really love to have are a 1936 Packard Super Eight, the epitome of luxury and grace in automobile, and a 1952 Allard J5. The Allards are a hybrid Brit sports car, with massive Cadillac engines(I'll take the V12 version) shoehorned into sports car bodies hardly bigger than an MG Midget. The Allard won numerous racing trophies in it's day, and would still be a factor in any race it entered, even today.

Classic Cars, you just can't stop at one.

Actually, that was the first car I ever owned, and I miss it.

Positive ground electrics (ran my 8-track backwards until I figured that one out), spoked wheels with knock-off hubs, dual Weber carbs I had to 'balance' with an orange juice can and a float, rack and pinion steering and a HUGE steering wheel, close ratio gears in the trany and a ragtop with optional 'tonneau' cover. Sigh.

I bought it for $800 and sold it for $400 four years later after an upper control arm snapped. The guy fixed it in 4 days, and loved to drive it past my house after that...
