2. I used to always look YOUNGER than my actual age...

then... all of a sudden you hit 40, 41, 42, 43... and the next thing you know you're 44 with the hairline that lies and gray temples that lie... and BIFOCALS that lie.

Sigh... at least my skin is still firm. (Until next year, I imagine.)

It could be worse I suppose. What do I have to complain about??

I'm told I look younger. I'll be 41 next month and I got carded a few years ago. But to me, I look 40. (On edit: Oh, yeah: I don't care how old I look or whether I look my age.)

When people say "you don't have a single wrinkle!" I tell them, "You wanna know my secret? Stay fat. It stretches the skin."

I reversed the trend about 4 years ago when I was between jobs. Wish I'd done it years ago. BTW it was my wife's idea.

But I think that's only because I've never been a sun worshiper. My mother and grandmother (until she got ill) have always looked much younger than their age, so maybe there's some good genes in there somewhere too. I also have small facial features, which tend to make people look younger.

Now, if I could only get rid of this "baby belly". It's only been 3 months, but I'm very impatient.

10. I am 36 and still get carded for alcohol. I personally think it

is a stretch but most people think I am in my late 20's. I love looking younger! My husband and I have 4 kids and alot of people say "you have 4 kids! You don't look old enough!" I'll take it! I am at that point in life if people want to compliment me for looking younger, I will be vain and smile my ass off for the rest of the day!

Edit: good skin so far. After 4 kids I can still wear a bikini because I only got one 1/2 inch stretch mark. I hope my skin stays good!

I birthed my kid at 40, so naturally most people at work think I am anywhere from 27-38 (yes one woman thought I was 27!) But I let them think I am younger.

On the other hand, friends who know me have told me that since the advent of some very difficult things in my life, something indescribable in my eyes looks a hundred years older.

20. I've been told that I look younger

The people at work think that I am between 21-23 years old (I just turned 26). I must have been pretty accomplished to only be that old, graduated from college, and have worked there for two and a half years. In a way, I want to look young. In a way, I don't want to look young because I don't think that I am taken as seriously and thought of as a kid. I figure that I'll look old soon enough. I won't look younger without some serious treatments.

I'm still sometimes carded 10+ years after I'm legal. Frequently I get the "you look so young" comment as well. I chock it up to clean living and good genes. I think long hair has something to do with it too. So many women chop it off once they get into their late 20's or 30's.

I don't mind. I'm not ready to be old anyway.

I'm not very objective. As a teenager, I always looked older than I was. In my 20s and 30s, I looked younger than people assumed I was, because of my kids' ages. In my 40s, I can't tell. I think people assume I'm older than I am because I don't color the gray.

it seems that a majority of people believe they look younger than their age so, then their age actually looks more like that than some idea about what their age is "supposed" to look like... what is the deal? so then most people actually look their age as opposed to the idea of the age... just wondering...

36. I'm Guessing That One's Outlook On Life...

... and their general health will contribute greatly to their own perception of whether or not they look younger or older. Their outlook and perception of themselves may also have an effect on the *reality* of how others perceive them as well.

One's perception of what a certain age looks like would also be a reflection of their cultural, regional, and socioeconomic background as well. It's very likely that trendy, hip, urban people would be more self conscious of the normal signs of age than, say, a rural farm worker would be.

You made some interesting observations about the poll results. Could it be that everyone who feels they look younger than their actual age is in denial? Or is it just wishful thinking? Are they believing the 'white lies' that courteous friends flatter them with?

This started out as a light-hearted "throwaway" poll that I expected to quickly die. --- It's interesting to see the results.

My grandpa died at 92. My dad just turned ninety. He looks no more than 65, and if a piano doesn't fall on his head there's no reason why he shouldn't reach 100 with a leg tied behind his back.

I hated it when I was in high school and college; I looked like a younger kid. Now that I'm in my forties, I love it. I'm 48, and a lot of people who meet me think I'm in my thirties. (I've recently been doing a 33-year-old guy, and that's even better proof for me that I don't look my age.)

Because I'm single and looking, I like looking younger because I feel that if I looked my age or older, fewer guys would be attracted to me. I'm fortunate to have good genes for this on both sides of my family. Both of parents are in their early eighties, and neither of them look nearly that old.

I'm 28 and I still get carded just about every time I order a drink or try to buy alchol at the store. Not that I necessarily look younger than 21, but clearly young enough to make the servers and cashiers cautious! I also regularly get accosted by the recruiters of various stripes in the student union ("Need money for college? Join ROTC!" "Have you thought about graduate school? Start preparing early!") and enjoy the surprised looks on their faces when I tell them they're too late, I'm in year 7 of grad school.

I keep telling myself that I'll be glad of it when I'm 40, but it is something of a liability now. When I'm teaching, it always takes a few class meetings before all the students clearly trust that I know what I'm supposed to know to be teaching them, and when I first started teaching (at age 23, and the students -- mostly traditional college students -- were very close to my age)it was very difficult to get their respect. I still remember the shock on the faces of that first class; they had assumed I was one of them, and some of them never did treat me with the respect that was shown to instructors who looked older (and were male, but that's another issue entirely).
