Those are really excellent pictures, and the anteaters are soooo cute, they look pettable. Are they?

7. Their fur is kind of wiry...

like a border collie's. I'm sure they can be pettable; but sadly, they are endangered (at least the giant anteater is...I'm not sure about the other varieties) in the wild. They don't move very quickly, and their meat is considered a delicacy by many South Americans. They're also relatively easy prey for jaguars.

They are awfully cute, though...

OK, when I am rich and can properly provide for an anteater, I want to get one...maybe a rescue from some roadside zoo...they are sooooo cute!

5. You better have a lot of ants around your house.

They eat about a hundred pounds of ants a day
I believe. That's several thousands of ants.
Ants are basically exoskeleton, if I recall,
which is like paper and formica acid, so that
the nutritional value is very low, meaning they
have to eat many many many of them. You can buy
ants off of the internet I believe, but they
would run you $50-100 a day easy. Just a couple
things to think about.

6. zoo diet

I don't know the state of the art, but in previous years animals of this nature were fed a mixture of fine ground meat and eggs seasoned with formic acid and vitamins. Yum! Sounds like a Beacon morning.

Anteaters?




Jimmy Pelzel was named first-team All-American last year and returns to lead the Anteaters in 2004. The 2003 team was the most successful in school history with a 20-11 overall ranking and No. 5 ranking. The Anteaters were ranked No. 1 for three weeks last season and advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.

The UCI Intercollegiate Athletics program offers NCAA Division I competition in 23 sports. The majority of the Anteater teams compete in the Big West Conference, with others in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. At the end of the 2002-03 school year, eight teams were ranked nationally.

UCI has won 23 national team championships in eight different sports. In addtion, the University has had nearly 400 All-Americans since 1965 and has acknowledged 2,221 Scholar-Athletes, including a school record 170 in 2003.

UCI has captured 48 Big West Conference titles in the past 26 years and has been awarded 49 conference “Athlete of the Year” awards as well as 58 conference “Coach of the Year” honors.

23. Heh yeah, although it walks on two legs

A Pangolin mooches along on it's hind legs, balanced by that huge tail, with the front claws held under it's "shoulders" (they're too specialised for walking with), kind of like the things from "The Dark Crystal" - I saw one on a wildlife program, and while I grant you there's almost nothing that looks as cool as a giant anteater, you have to see footage of a Pangolin strolling along - it's fantastic, really wierd, like something from another world.

Having googled for "pangolin movie", not all pangolins walk the way I described, or at least not all the time. I did see it though! Apologies for (slightly) false info.

It's interesting that a creature that looks like that would be able to walk on his hind legs. Apparently the tail is prehensile, too! Very cool!

The Cape Pangolin apparently walks on it's hind legs sometimes - that may have been the one I saw on TV - I can't remember the species or the programme, but I'm pretty sure it was David Attenborough. Sorry to be a tease.
