Thieves take car; cops make music

Police have added a musical twist to the booby-trapped car they leave out to entice would-be thieves.

A videotape recently shot on the car's hidden cameras shows a man hopping in the driver's seat and muttering to himself, "I got me a good one."

He drives a short distance before an officer monitoring the situation from a remote location flips a switch that disables the engine and locks the door. Then, the car's tape player can be heard blaring the reggae-inflected tune from the television show's (cops) opening credits:

"Bad boys, bad boys/Whatcha gonna do/Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?"

Potential thieves will see the tape played over and over and over and over on the local TV news and be dissuaded from stealing cars.

Car thieves drive up YOUR insurance rates.
The insurance company pays the claim, and they raise everybody's rates.
After all, they gotta keep that bottom line healthy.
And, I guess you never got your car stolen either.
Also, maybe the thief is wanted for other crimes, maybe violent crimes.

I'm generally uncomfortable with the idea of sting/entrapment operations, but parking a car as bait for car theives seems reasonable to me. Its not like the cops are out there encouraging people to steal it (like when they pose as drug dealers.)
