Question regarding books on puberty
Does anyone out there have any recommendations of books about pre-puberty and puberty for girls. I need to have this discussion with my nine year old and I have no idea where to start the discussion. I would be interested in any recommendations of books for her and for me. I was raised "old school" and didn't get the filmstrip presentation until 5th grade. Help please and as always, thank you.

1. I'm not sure about books about sexuality
but as a mother of two girls I can recommend Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher. It is about pre-adolescent and adolescent girls and what they are dealing with growing up in our culture. I wish I had read it before my first one hit that age (now grown but had a hard time in junior high). My youngest is 12 so we are in the middle of it but she is not having as hard a time.

2. Judy Blume is your friend. "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret"
The above title is fiction but is very educational about menstruation and the crazy social situations pubescent girls have to deal with.

Anything by Judy Blume is great for kids, but "Are You There, God?" is her best, IMHO.

3. I wanted to answer this
So I ventured into my daughter's room (she'll be 12 in 3 weeks) to try to find what books I got her. It was such a mess, I couldn't find them. :grr:
Anyway, I agree about the Judy Blume stuff, but also go to Amazon and look up the subject matter and read some reviews. You'll get a good indication of books and which books match your own values. I agree about doing it now though. By 5th grade, she had a boyfriend already :wow: . Nothing major going on by any means at this age, but girls need a grasp on things. Fortunately, my daughter and I are able to be very open about these things and she's got a really good head on her shoulders.

4. Thanks --
I went to Amazon and found "Growing Up, It's a Girl Thing" for her and "Before She Gets her Period" for me. She is just 9, but early on-set goes on in my family. The Growing Up book sounds like a good bet for one so young. I am sooo nervous about this. Now, what do we do about the room thing?

5. I can't speak to books for girls...
But Penthouse and Oui worked for me a pre and post pubescent boy (and post-post-post-post pubescent...) :evilfrown:

6. How about just coming out and talking to her about it?
It's the easiest way to go. No need to beat around the bush.

That's what I would do, anyways.
