James Brown Arrested on Domestic Violence
Soul singer James Brown was arrested Wednesday on domestic violence charges, authorities said.
Brown, 70, was booked into the county jail and was to appear at a bond hearing, said jail supervisor Nicholas Gallam.

James Brown doesn't feel good.

Just my opinion.

7. Can we say 'some' Black men?
Or does one Black man's violent behavior represent all of us, or at least all of the Black men Brown's age? And was it James Brown who was beating the hell out of the woman who sang 'Stand By Your Man'?

Thanks.

8. "It's a man's world"
...always thought that was kind of a creepy song. And blues, which is where he comes from originally, has a strong tradition of machismo values.

But I would reject the argument that violence towards women is an essential characteristic of that music. And white men have a long and storied tradition of wife abuse of their own. I don't see this as a racial issue at all.

It just saddens me that a guy I admire so greatly as an artist has such a despicable habit of brutality in his private life.

9. Two sides to every story
I think we might be in agreement. My earlier comment was to make sure that Brown’s current predicament isn’t intentionally or unintentionally viewed in racial terms. The opinion was offered that Brown’s behavior reflects all Black men of his era, I disagree with that opinion.

Plain and simple. A difference of opinion.

Now, as for Blues having a strong tradition of machismo values, last time I checked we were in America, the land of the free and home of the brave, all brought to you by men. Or so they say.

Does Brown's behavior disappoint me? Sure it does.

Truth be known, I am surrounded by women in my immediate family, one being a teenage daughter. Plus I have long-time female friends. In no way do I condone or apologize for battery against women, and any man (in my humble opinion) who becomes physical with a woman is nothing but a cowardly punk.

However, this won’t be the first time I’ve been disappointed by a person whom I've held in high esteem, and I’m sure there will be others. But let me say again, in my opinion, Brown's brutal behavior toward women is not representative of all Black men of his era.

By the way, I think A Man's World is one of the best songs Brown ever recorded. It’s always a big favorite at all the ‘old school’ parties I’ve attended.

I was never a witness to that.

19. Any statistical proof of such an inflammatory statement?
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 09:40 AM by demdave
I would like a link to support your views on this. None of the black men from this era that I know beat women. Maybe you have access to a study of a more representavive group. I don't know any 70 year old rich black men, only 70 year old lower middle class fathers of my friends. So please enlighten me.

For a minute I thought someone had redirected my link to the FR. I hesitate to use the term "rascist" until I get that link proving "James Brown's behavior is relative to black men growing up in that era." If it is "just your opinion" and you have no basis in fact or statistical info to form that opinion from, then I have to reconsider using the term.

20. I knew this would happen when I made that statement
first, let me say "some" black men.

I grew up in an environment where violence toward women was normal. I watched it first hand. I'm 47 -- do the math.

Sorry, I don't have a link, just first hand experience.

It may appear that maybe I just come from a fucked up family, but it (the violence) wasn't limited to my family. I saw it all around me.

24. Poverty and ignorance is a good breeding ground for violence
When you grow up in such an environment, it is quite possible you will be violent as well. Brown is neither poor or ignorant. He is way over that. So, there is NO excuse for his behavior, and the fact that he grew up in the "hood" doesn't make it more likely. That's why I say your assessment is BS. You take all the responsibility away from him and give him a bogus excuse to justify his actions. I don't buy that.

I'm not, in any way, EXCUSING his behavior.

I'm not, in any way, JUSTIFYING his behavior.

I'm as stymied as you as to why this man acts like this and continues to act like this.

I was just saying that old habits die hard.

And that was all I was trying to intimate.

26. HABIT?!?! Beating a woman is an habit?!?!? Good grief....
No it's a criminal behavior. He has nobody, not even his crummy childhood, parents or "hood" to blame. There is nothing cultural there. You beat up a woman, you are a deadbeat, rich or poor. Biting you nails is an habit, beating you girlfriend is a crime.

by now . . . I guess some people really never do learn what they're supposed to, no matter how many lessons they get . . . I like James, and I'm sorry that he's in trouble again, but damn, someone needs to slap him upside the head real good . . .

17. Why is a Dem forum so quick to "convict" every time?
Don't Dems like hearing both sides of a story?
You know innocent until proven guilty?
Who knows what is behind this story.
I saw everyone around here convict M.Jackson at just the suggestion that charges were being filed.

Shame on you guys.

James Brown is guilty now?

What?

The dude may have gotten into an argument or something...who knows.

and here's a few other things for those of you who convict so easily:
Is the coroprate media your main source for the TRUTH ?
Did you also buy the WMD assertion?
Did you believe Bush's SOTU?
Did you believe that since they turned down the crowd noise on that film clip that Dean was suddenly mental?
you probably did!!!
haha then they got you !!!
Did believe the latest Kerry polls?
Are they going to pick your candidate for you?
If the news told you tomorrow that Ted Kennedy was a republican in disguise would you believe them?
I believe you actually might !!
I can see the threads now.
Who are you people??
What states do you live in?

Sorry for the long rant but I don't like being a part of a group of mob mentallity idiot sheep jumpers!

Those that questioned , not intended for you--big points on that.
