2. Sweet! The guy who bought that ball is my new hero!
Anyone with the courage and integrity to properly deface a ball of that importance (or as I say "infamy") is, in my book, a Very Great Man.

:applause:

3. Racism.
In the United States proper one is assumed innocent until PROVEN guilty. The ball should go to Cooperstown without the markings of a lynch mob. If at some later date Bonds is PROVEN guilty of what is alleged the ball can THEN be marked with a caveat.

Yet another embarrassing moment for freedom, justice, and civil rights in the USA.

6. You're talking about trial procedures for a criminal prosecution.
Bonds is not being prosecuted for anything.

The irritation is that Bonds may have cheated in breaking a record that Hank Aaron won without cheating. I don't see how you can call this racism, especially since Hank Aaron was also Black.

8. It's not just criminal prosecution.
Anybody with a true sense of justice will require real PROOF of something before savaging somebody else's reputation or degrading their achievements.

It's also embarrassing that somebody would think social justice only applies to what goes on in a courtroom.

12. So people doubting a millionaire player of a child's game...
...has something to do with social justice? Has he been penalized in any way? He's still rich. He's still famous. He's still making a very good living at his non-job. There is no right to have people think well of you.

Look, I'm not a sports fan and don't even know the basis for these allegations. I do know that unlike Pete Rose, Bonds has not been penalized in any way.

15. I didn't say I knew it. I said a person does not have a right ...
... to a good reputation. I also wanted to know what the basis for the allegations was. My understanding is that people give a lot more doubt benefits to famous people than to the rest of us.

18. Was the book from another player?
I seem to remember someone putting one out. I seem to remember that the writer fingered a number of players.

Why is it racist?

Why is such mock outrage directed at one man? I think its obvious.

25. Yes, it's obvious. He may have committed sacrilege.
PEople treat pro sports like religion. Anything that sullies it is blasphemy. That is why Pete Rose will never be forgiven and why the possibility of cheating is so outrageous to people. Frankly, whether he doped or not makes no difference to me. The show is the same either way. To me, the White Sox scandal would not have been much of a scandal. The game was fixed? So what? It's a business for the purpose of entertainment.

So I agree that the outrage is misplaced especially considering what goes on in this world without any notice, much less outrage. I do not agree with the reason it is misplaced.

23. Cheating vs. Racism
Cheating (steroid use, etc.), can be proved. With science, chemical analysis, legal facts, etc. Racisim cannot be "proved" in the same way. Which makes it, in my opinion, EXTRA important that we are careful before we throw around terms like racism with regard to Bonds. I can only use myself as an example: white male, in my 40s, sports fan. Pittsburgh native. My idols and heroes, growing up, were Clemente, Stargell, Mean Joe Green, Franco Harris, Swann, Stallworth, Lambert and Bradshaw. Of those eight, only the last two were white. In later years, my Pirate heroes could be summed up in two names: "Bonds and Bonilla."

Fifteen years later, I believe that Bonds cheated by using performance-enhancing chemicals. I think the evidence is overwhelming. And so I belive that his home-run record is tainted. I count Hammerin' Hank among my top five atletes of all time. I watched it live on TV when he broke Babe Ruth's record. I will never forget that day. I will also never forget that racist abuse Hank endured while reaching and passing Ruth's record.

Hank, Clemente, Jim Thorpe, Jim Brown, Michael Jordan and Ali are the six best atheletes who ever lived, in my opinion. And I think Barry Bonds cheated.

You're calling me a racist? Let's discuss.

22. The president of the Hall says it will
Hall of Fame president Dale Petroskey said accepting the ball did not mean the Hall in Cooperstown, N.Y., endorses the viewpoint that Barry Bonds used drugs.

"This ball wouldn't be coming to Cooperstown if Marc hadn't bought it from the fan who caught it and then let the fans have their say," Petroskey told The Associated Press. "We're delighted to have the ball. It's a historic piece of baseball history."
