How many counties are in your state?
Maine's got a whopping 16, one of which (Aroostook, also known as "The County") takes up pretty much the entire north. And we've got a snazzy elementary-school song, set to "Yankee Doodle," to help kiddos remember 'em!

The sixteen counties in our state
Are Lincoln, Knox, and Hancock,
Sagadahoc and Somerset,
Aroostook and Penobscot.
Waldo, Washington, and York...
Cumberland and Franklin.
Piscataquis and Kennebec--
Oxford, Androscoggin!

23. Actually they can't. GA's constitution limits the number to 159
They're trying to split the main county in the state - Fulton, which is where Atlanta is - up into two, but it would take an amendment to the state constitution and it isn't getting any support.

Poor rich white people in North Fulton who don't want anything to do with the poorer (i.e. black) neighborhoods in South Fulton...

54. Georgia has so many counties (for its size) because once upon a time
the state went by "county rule", i.e., every county had an equal vote in the legislature. This meant that little Banks County had the same voice as big ol' Fulton. Kept those Atlanta libruls in their place.

At one time (don't know exactly when but know it was way back when) the north part of Fulton was Milton County. Is that the excuse for splitting up Fulton?

There used to be a rule in Texas that the county seat of one county could not be more than one day's horse ride from the neighboring county seats. Hence the number of counties.

Corrected info.

county government in this state. It was abolished back in the 1970s.

Which I think may have been the best thing the state ever did, eliminating one layer of government.

53. Five (one not organized)
City and County of Honolulu (O'ahu plus the uninhabited Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, making it technically the farthest-flung city on Earth!), Kaua'i (includes Ni'ihau, home of the only remaining Hawaiian-speaking community), Maui (includes the islands of Moloka'i and Lana'i) and Hawai'i (the Big Island). Kalawao County consists of the historic Hansen's disease settlement at Kalaupapa and is administered directly by the state department of health.

What we don't have are cities; the county executives are called "mayors".

57. It always surprises me how small American counties are
You'd have thought that they'd be the same size, or bigger, than English counties. But England has 48 counties (that's the 'ceremonial county' list - the definition has been a bit of a moving target, but that includes counties that were created to hold cities that grew rather large to be in the old traditional counties), with an average area of about 2700 sq. km - which would put it between Texas and Minnesota in the list of American states' mean county area - among the bigger, more sprawling states. But in population terms, the English counties have over a million each, on average - where most US states don't have a single county that populous.

That's a few too many, especially in the sparser populated areas. It's been a big debate in the state too. But it's a glaring reminder of how Iowa was settled in comparison to many other states in the U.S.
