The North Dakota State University professor recently returned from six weeks at the bottom of the world, about 300 miles northeast of the South Pole.

``It was balmy compared to here,'' Ashworth said by telephone from Fargo, which reported a temperature of 29 below zero Wednesday morning, with a wind chill of more than 40 below.

Ashworth said temperatures in Antarctica, where it's summer now, never got colder than 15 below zero while he was there. He noted, though, that wintertime temperatures at the South Pole can reach 80 below--cold even by North Dakota standards.

4. How is it possible to be northeast of the South Pole?

"... about 300 miles northeast of the South Pole." I thought every direction was north. I suppose one could go north first, and then turn eastward when you are away from the Pole, but you still end up totally north. You can't start out eastward from the Pole because that's impossible.

This is normal for us. I feel bad for those who don't usually get this kind of weather and have to endure it without the systems in place that we have!

Heck, I'm on a snowmobile at 30 below - it's not considered "too cold". The kids in local schools play outside at recess till 25 below.

According to weather.com, it's -16 with a -28 wind chill where you are. Here, it's -26 with a -48 wind chill. HAH!!! I WIN!!!!! :P:P:P:P:P:P:P

my sister's in the Antarctic right now, and she's having to bundle up about as much as I do to go get the freaking mail. Dang! Though, she's from So.Cal. and the Antarctic is always a bit more of a shock to her than it would be me.
