Coltrane, Miles, Lee Morgan, Brad Mehldau and Wes Montgomery are my favorites. I've been getting into blues recently: Johnny Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Lonnie Johnson and Elmore James to name a few.

Actually, I find him to be a cross between Evans and Corea. Very lyrical like Evans but with the percussive sound of Corea. No one can really compare with Evans however. The God of the piano.

2. All of the above, and more

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of flamenco and gypsy music from Spain. I'm learning flamenco guitar and it's always good to get inspiration from the "new" masters like Paco De Lucia and Tomatito, and also from the "classics" like Sabicas, Carlos Montoya and the amazing Manitas de Plata.

Otherwise, I like a fairly decent mix of everything-- from Public Enemy to cheezy 80s new wave to obscure art-rock bands like Can and Hawkwind to wickid 70s funk like Parliament/Funkadelic and the Commodores and even Johnny Cash and George Jones. Not to mention Miles Davis for chillin out and the sick pleasures of 70s glam like Roxy Music and Sweet.

Yeah, I'm one sick puppy....

Except for rap. Or hip hop. A visceral reaction.

I spent 30 freakin' minutes in my classroom today trying to explain to a bunch of 10 year-olds what a pimp is, in legally protected terms, and why they couldn't call each other pimps, etc.

After a 10-year-old girl drew a bottle of "pimp juice" labeled with the title "pimpalicious," and glued it into a boy's desk. They tell me they got the word from some highly popular song by some band/performer named 50-something. 90% of them had no clue what a pimp was. Only 1 child out of the 10% left had a real glimmer. I'd like to shove 50-somethings lyrics down his/her/their throat and challenge them to compose something with the wealth of less hate-filled words in the english language.

Oops. Rant over. I love most music. Unless it is fueled by, or marketed with, hate or violence.

13. I know hip hop comes in a lot of flavors;

I heard, or saw, a few minutes live a couple of months ago. My son, who plays local venues, had a gig at a local saloon. When he was done, we sat and had a beer to catch up on family news, and the second round came on...a christian hip hop band.

I know there is more to it;

but when a room full of children casually toss the words "nigger," "pimp," "pimpalicious," etc. around because they are in the songs that are really "popular," and then tell me, wide-eyed, that of course they know what a pimp is; a really cool guy with a lot of girlfriends....

When I complain about the word "nigger" and a ten year-old says? "What? It's just a word" .....

I get pissed. I'll look for a listen to a few of your suggestions.

My son the musician would tell me that it's ok to express whatever you need to express through music; that's what music is all about. And that some people have anger and hate to express. It's an ongoing family debate.

I would particularly recommend "Tricks of the Shade", an album by The Goats. It's quite old now, but it's very politically aware. Tracks include "not your typical american" and "uncle scam's federally funded welfare and freak show".

Sure every type of music has it's share of people who suck. I am not trying to defend Nelly. I can't stand his music. I agree with KRS-ONE when he said that Nelly's whole albulm sounds like an N'Sync commercial. However I don't think an entire genre of music should be dismissed because of its worst aspects that don't represent all of it.

Which is the cheesy stuff that passes for Christian music these days. I like gospel, but that stuff is like cheez whiz.

Most of the time I listen to NPR. :)

But when feeling musical, I like so many different things I sometimes think I'm abnormal. The weirdest thing in my collection is La Bottine Souriante, a French folk music band. I have a lot of Peter Gabriel / old Genesis, and a lot of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as well.

I also love Dwight Yoakam, though. And I have Mary J. Blige. And Janis Joplin, of course. Also Cocteau Twins (:cry:), and Primus, and everything by Tool and Radiohead. Also Tori Amos, and I LOVE Polly Jean Harvey!!!! Oh yes and Queens of the Stone Age!

I could go on all day. :)

I work for a school and recently I let a student listen to some the Dead Prez CD I had on me. Because of one of the songs he became interested in reading Animal Farm by Orwell. So while some rap songs may have students talking about pimps (Yesterday I heard a student say "rollin like a pimp in a drop-top" in reference to JFK on the day he was assassinated.) others actually inspire them to try something they've never done before, like reading a book for pleasure.
