Bands With Long Careers But Very Few Great Records
Nazareth

"Hair Of The Dog" (1975) is usually the first record that comes to mind whenever this band's name is mentioned... But not much else. In fact, when looking through used record bins searching for Nazareth records, Hair Of The Dog is about all you ever see.

1. The Grateful Dead
They have to hold the record in this category. While their reputation as a live band is great, they left very little quality vinyl behind. Workingman's Dead. American Beauty, that's about it. The rest of their recorded output is pretty weak.

5. Dead Heads never bought the vinyl.
As an old Dead Head myself it was all about the bootleg tapes! Find a friend who recorded shows and you were set! It was all about "I have the last time they did Darkstar live" and you had to get it. Of course it was better when you were there to see it live!

Were you a fellow Dead Head?

10. Yeah, the boys were never much for studio work
I'm an old head, but I have to agree. The songs and craft on Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are first rate. After that... The Terrapin Record is well made, but only has two good songs on it.

It was the live performing that stirred that drink.

37. Those are two excellent Dead albums.
I agree- their real appeal was the live show.

16. I liked the Pump album ok, circa 1990...
but I still think of it as "new" Aerosmith. Their stuff after that which made them super-rich and mega-famous, well, someone else can have it, I'm not interested.

They had some good albums during their "comeback," before they went the corporate way.

6. When you say "Great" records,
do you mean "hit" records?

Many hit records are not great records, i.e.

Lucky Man- Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Roundabout- Yes
Money- Pink Floyd
My ding-a-ling- Chuck Berry

Did Wishbone Ash ever have a "hit" record?

14. Money is from DSOM
Which was on the top 200 album charts for something like 83 million weeks. Granted, Money is the worst song and the most overplayed song on the album, but it's still a great album, and a commercial success. Produced by Alan Parsons.

7. The Capris
They had on hit in 1962 with "There's a Moon Out Tonight", and their second hit didn't come until 20 years later - 1982's "Morse Code of Love".

MORSE CODE OF LOVE aka BABY COME BACK TO ME
(Nick Santamaria)

The Capris - 1982
Manhattan Transfer - 1983
Also recorded by: The Tokens; The Alleycats; Wild Wind; The Shackshakers; The Van-Dells; The Mighty Echoes; The Showvinistics.

Dit dot ditty dit dot a ditty ditty
Dit dot ditty dit dot a ditty ditty
Dit dot ditty dit dot a ditty ditty
Dit dot ditty, Baby come home to me

I sent my baby a telegram asking to be her man
Begging her to come back home to me (Baby come home to me)
Oh I dotted the I's and I crossed the T's
And I'm begging pretty please
Honey honey, come back home to me (Baby come home to me)

Dit dotÉ..
Baby I want your love
Woo-oo
Baby I need your love
Ooo
Honey honey come back home to me (Come back home to me)
Dit dotÉ.
Got to have your love
Woo-oo
Can't live without your love
Woo-oo
Honey honey come back home to me (Come back home to me)

Oh I made mistakes, yes that's the truth
But the biggest one I made with you
Honey honey, come back home to me (Baby come home to me)
I thought that you would understand
I'm just a one woman man
Not like before so come back home to me (Baby come home to me)

Dit dot...
Baby I want your love
Woo-oo
Baby I need your love
Ooo
Honey honey come back home to me (Come back home to me)
Dit dot...
Got to have your love
Woo-oo
Can't live without your love
Woo-oo
Honey honey come back home to me (Come back home to me)

Dit dot ditty dit dot a ditty ditty
Ooo, aahh (Baby come home to me)
I said
Come back come back to me
Come back come back to me
Come back baby come back to me
Come back come back to me

20. Todd Rundgren
Love the guy. After a few hits in the early 70's, he kind of went his own way.

He's an amazing producer as well. Some of my favorite albums had his hands on the mixer.

35. Point taken,
but I love a lot of his stuff from the 80s.

reprehensor had never heard anything off Oblivion or POV, and couldn't believe it was by the same guy since he had heard stuff like "Hiroshima" years ago. He was incredulous.

I liked his Tubes collaborations, and all the production work he did for folks like P Furs, Pursuit of Happiness, Bourgeois Tagg, etc.

Todd is God.

45. Oh, I disagree
their first album is great! It's one of the few 'pop' releases in my collection I can listen to and enjoy every track equally. It's up there with Weezer's first album, Gun Club's Fire of Love, Devo's Freedom of Choice, Pixie's Dolittle, and Roxy Music's Flesh and Blood.
