Ever read Doonesbury? Gary Trudeau (who I'm fairly sure is VERY liberal) has made it a tradition for years to designate a "symbol" for people in the news so that he doesn't have to repeately draw them. Bush I was a "Point of Light" in reference to his infamous speech, Dan Quayle was a feather, Bill Clinton was a waffle, Newt Gingrich was a bomb, and when GW first began floating the idea of running for president, Trudeau introduced him into the strip as an asterisk. It was originally intended to represent a "point of light, like his father, only without the pretty light". After the sElection, Trudeau changed his explanation to: "Since half the country will always believe Bush lost the election, future historians and teachers are going to have some serious explaining to do."

It migrated from Doonesbury onto the Internet and into the liberal conciousness (I've seen it at quite a few websites, not just DU).

Like how they put an * behind the name of whoever has the single-season home run record if he needed more games to break the record than Babe Ruth did the year he hit sixty. A way to say "he holds the mark, but he's not the "real" recordholder because The Babe played a shorter season."

In the case of Bush, he gets the asterisk because he's not the real president, since real presidents earn more votes from the American people than their opponents do.
