Saw Elizabeth, The Golden Age. No spoiler except it sucked.
Save your money and drop the same price as two tickets on the HBO miniseries Elizabeth I with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons. It is much, much better.

It was a lavish set, but the story and dialogue especially were stock, unimaginative, cliched, cardboard and really just silly. As in the first film, the events are somewhat fictionalized. Unlike the first film, there was no nuance and no tension. Rush returned as Walsingham, but it was a thowaway character in the sequel. Without giving anything away, I wanted to see more politics and Armada and less soap opera.

In real life Elizabeth's two closest advisors were Robert Dudley, Earl Leicester, and Lord Burley. Unfortunately, the fictional retirement of those characters in the first film meant that they were missing from the second.

2. They didn't have ROBERT DUDLEY in the film?
WTF????

That's illegal in any film about Elizabeth I. Seriously.

4. SPOILER for the first Blanchette as Elizabeth film.
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 04:16 PM by Deep13
They made him part of the conspiracy in film #1. Consequently, Queen Betsy had him banished. That never happened in real life.

9. Of course Dudley was shunned away from Liz after a time.
That's history--she wanted to marry him to Mary Stuart after a time. The Dudley fall from power was spectactularly odd.

11. Yes, but it was brief. Court politics was a tumultuous affair. nt

3. That's a shame
I've really been looking forward to it. "Elizabeth" was one of my favorite movies of recent years.

5. SPOILER for those who have not seen Blanchette as Eliz. in film #1.
The first film was excellent as a movie. Historically, it was a mess. I was especially irritated by the concluding written sentence about how Elizabeth never saw Robert Dudley (Leicester) again or never saw him in private again. What a load of crap. Burley, Leicester and Wolsingham were E.I's closest advisors for the rest of their lives and Leicester was her closest friend. (E. survived them all.)

6. Oh, I agree
it's lousy history.

But what a movie! I couldn't take my eyes off Blanchett, and i'm STILL pissed she lost the Oscar to Gwyneth Paltry.

8. More Spoilers
And portraying Cecil as an old man. He was 38 when Elizabeth became queen. Not young by the standards of the day, but certainly not white haired.

She booted Sweet Robin out of court for a time when she found out about his marriage, but she never permanently exile him. She loved that bad boy.

10. But its got Clive Owen
and I am madly in love with him. I've read the reviews on Elizabeth and they stink but I'm afraid I have to put that all aside to just watch my love on the screen.........

Thank you for the heads up.
