After two summers enduring Washington DC Hell (literally) I finally bit the bullet last week and got the air conditioner in my 12 year old VW Jetta repaired.
Cost over $500US, but it also turned out it was cheaper for me to convert the system to R134a refrigerant than it would have been to fix it and then pump the old-style R-12 Freon back in at $65US the pound.
This morning's drive to the Metro station was one of the best I have ever had.

1. Two pieces of good news! |
|
You have cool air, and you are more environmentally sound!
Even when I drove my old beater Mazda truck, I always made sure it had functioning a/c. I've been through Texas summers without it - NEVER AGAIN!

2. Congrats, UIBP - my 13-year old Accord is freon-deficient right now... |
|
...and that is no way to live in Houston, either.
As soon as I get the freon money (2@$65+repair+labor) together, I'll be chillin'...cannot happen too fast.
In the meantime, I'll be vicariously commuting with you. :D

Even up here in Minnesota, where A/C isn't needed more than 4-5 months out of the year, I wish I could kiss its inventor every day. One of the single greatest inventions of all time (being a subset of the technology of refrigeration).

4. Running down the road, air is at 39 degrees at the dash vent... |
|
It don't get much better than that. Of course, I only get to run it like that when I'm by myself...
"It transcends Air Conditioning, it's really more like Refrigeration..."
Comment to a co-worker this AM....
