1. Ankle. Sleveless*, bring a wrap or something in case there's a breeze
*Unless body issues mandate sleeves.

Step it back a shade of formality from where you would go otherwise, so a brighter color would be okay, for example.

2. Formal, yes.
But full length for a guest at a wedding? I haven't seen anything like that for years. I hope others chime in here. I really don't think full length is required for anything these days, except if you go to one of the really fancy charity events.
What would be considered formal wear for your area? I would imagine a tea length pretty dress would be great. A nice pants suit (but not a business type suit) would also do.
Color -- I don't think it's an issue of fall or non-fall colors. Get anything except white, cream, or pastel. You don't want to be mistaken for someone in the wedding party. People even wear black at a wedding these days.

4. Tea-length pretty dress is what I actually was gonna wear.
So, thanks for validating me. Actually, I just wanna fade into the woodwork ... my relatives who are throwing this wedding all have style to spare; I've never had any (but I have other qualities!). I want to be unnoticed, and not inappropriate.
