"Harbinger of Gloom" Posting again "Traditional Vs. Virtual Colonoscopies"
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 06:24 PM by KoKo01
I didn't go back to "dig up" last night's thread about "member of household" preparing for Colonoscopy.......because ABC News just did a feature on the "NEW, Virtual Colonoscpies" so I thought this might be posted as "NEW" info.

Now, the ABC segment focused on a guy who just didn't want to go through the "traditional" colonoscopy.....they didn't say why........but then they showed him with his gallon plastic jug of "Colyte" (Go Lightly), that he has to drink and they showed him in that "claustophobic" CAT Scan Machine where you lie on a slab and this round x-ray machine" does an image (virtual colonoscopic image) of his colon.)

He get's the results (according to ABC) an finds he has two polyps of "large size" he now has to go back to his gastroenerologist and go through the whole "Day's fast with clear liquids, nothing to eat after Midnight and drink the GALLON of Colyte so that his tumor (polyp) can be "cut off" by the scope that could have done it the first time!

So, my view of the ABC Report on the "NEW VIRTUAL Colonoscopy" says: BULL SHIT! A businessperson's (ABC ) push of their stock to get people away from the "Traditional" and create a New Market"......when in fact....the Preparation (which is the worst is the SAME, but and there is only a70% to 90% accuracy for "Virtual" whereas the "Traditional is ABOVE 95%" and they can snip the little polyp or, the big polyp off with their inter "rotor rooter" cameras guiding the scalpels.

Why would ANYOHE choose "Virtual" over "Traditional" unless they want more "pain and suffering?"

I'm into this because a dear friend is dying of "Colon Cancer" and I had it and survived.......but on my "dear friend's " death certificate it will read "Death due to Bone Cancer" rather than "Death due to Colon Cancer." He died because of a huge polyp in his colon which then spread to other organs. The Pathologist/Coroner only list THE CAUSE of death........not WHAT LEAD TO THE CAUSE OF DEATH.

PLEASE DU'ers with ANY history (no matter how remote....cousins.....whatever) if anyone died in your family with a history of Colon involvement.......go and find the best Gastroenterologis in your area......Fast and Drink the gallon of Colyte and just figure that giving up 1 1/2 days of your life to go through a colonoscopy by "traditional methods" is worth it in the long run for your family, your children, your partners, your life! ...... to fight on against Bush.

Please do it..............

BTW.......My hubbie had his second group of polyps which could have killed him....but since he went through a colonoscopy just two years ago.....his polyps were small enough for "cauterization" using the little 1/2 inch "rotor rooter....which is a metal tube with striations the same as plumber's use to clean your drain in your sink, but it has a miniscule camera and scalpel which "snips" the polyps off at the colon wall). It's totallly PAINLESS, NO DISCOMFORT! But, the PREP, (fasting and drinking) TURNS FOLKS OFF!

DO IT PLEASE! IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!

1. Thank you for the public service message!
Virtual Colonoscopy just sounds like a way for the hospitals to justify the $$$ they spent on the machines. I'll stick with the *gold standard*, too.

2. I've had two colonoscopies
both traditional. The procedure is nothing, it's the prep that sucks.

I had to take about three bottles of FLEET stuff to clean me out and not eat for two days.

Ugh.

The procedure itself is kinda fun...if you enjoy getting a rotto rooter type devise shoved up your tushy. At least you get to watch from the overhead monitor and see what it looks like up there.

Veeeeeerry interesting!

3. My advice is to ask to be put under during the exam. I've
had it done both ways and much prefer not being conscious.

4. I like when they take out the rotto rooter thing
And you lay on the table while your ass makes like the longest continuous fart you've ever heard.

I think I timed it at like...25 minutes or something.

:)

5. LOL's reading your posts! It's so important I'm giving a kick..Gross or
Not! Nothing except Mammography and Prostate Blood Test....could be more important as diagnostic aids for us. And, yes....I kknow the insurance is an issue. They are so expensive.....that some plans may not cover.

so, press that "family issue" if you have histories. In most cases Insurance Companies will relent and give you the coverage. Just remember Chemotherapy is much more invasive and expensive...than the preventive.

7. Oh that sounds like fun!
On Thursday I go for a sigmoidoscopy, I'll pray my gas isn't smelly - unfortunately, it has been for the last month and I can just imagine everybody around me throwing up the instant they take a whiff...

:sniff: :sniff: :sniff: :puke:
