Oohh boy, big Job interview is tommorow!

Well, hopefully all goes well, I talked to the guy on the phone today, he seems okay. And I don't foresee any problems with the interview. Any advice DUers?...besides wear a suit.

1. be comfortable with your body

Sit up tall, don't play with your hair/fingers/nails/well, penis, but I should hope you know that! :evilgrin:

And be sure to write a real thank-you immediately afterwards. They're more formal than emailed thank-yous

2. First of all, good luck!

Remember that lots of different issues go into a hiring decision, so try to just be yourself.

Look the interviewer in the eyes, but if you perceive him becoming freaked, stop for a while, but eye contact is important.

Make sure that if you use the bathroom before going in that you don't have a toilet paper streamer.

Relax. Do yoga or meditate in the morning. Tell yourself you're deserving of the job (but don't say it out loud).

You'll be fine.

3. Just like before a big test, get a good night's sleep .....

eat a good breakfast. Be confident. Go into the interview convinced that you are the best possible candidate for the job. Give straightforward answers, offer letters of recommendation, even if they are not requested. Try to engage those who interview you on as personal a level as possible, without being too chatty. Good luck, we know you can do it.

4. smoke lots of weed

and rumple your clothes into a ball and then wear them to the interview.

5. Rehearse some of the "usual" questions in your mind.

The questions like:

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

and

"What's the worst/best job you've ever had?"

and

"Describe the worst/best boss you ever had?"

and

"What's your best/worst trait?"

Those are all pretty standard questions that people use to try to get a peek inside your cabeza.

You don't want to answer "What's the worst job" with "Oh this one job sucked so bad. They were like always giving me this really hard work. I was just like, whatever."

you get the idea.

7. Tell me about yourself...

Okay, here's the thing:

My boss, who's the CEO of our small company said that he read an article in Forbes or something, where it said that a good first question is: "Tell me about yourself" or something. Then you judge the applicant by his/her response. If s/he brings up their personal life, it's not good. S/he shoould respond explaining his/her past and experience and what makes him/her qualified to do the job.

Personally I think it's an idiotic test, but you never know if the guy you're interviewing with read the same article, so take care and

Good luck! Be sure to ask for a glass of water at the start, if you have a tendancy to get dry mouth (I do during interviews).

9. My advice.....for what it's worth......

For most jobs, by the time you've got to interview stage then the company will have reduced their list of applicants down to a fairly small number.

Nearly all of this number will be appropriately qualified and experienced for the job. What you need to do is:

1. Demonstrate the unique talents / experience / ideas / enthusiasm that you bring with you

2. Show that you're an easy, good, interesting person to work with.

Don't underestimate the strength of 2. Of course assholes do get hired, but believe me, it makes a real difference if you can show your people skills.

If the interviewer can choose between 2 equally good candidates, and while one is a well-rounded, interesting, friendly individual the other is a reclusive, introverted or boring person, then who do you think they'll choose?

Imagine the interviewer thinking "OK, it's Friday and I have to work late with someone........who will keep me awake, entertained, and still get the job done, and who will make me want to kill them?"

Seriously, having a life and a personality is important, but don't overplay it too much - it's still about the job, stupid!

10. HUMBLE ADVICE

Have an answer for the question, what are you best qualities and what are your worst qualities. Worst qualities should be something like I'm a workaholic.

11. No offence, but that's not a good answer....

"I'm a workaholic" sounds, at best, cliched, unoriginal and as if you've not thought about the question. At worst it suggests that you can't switch off from work, can't prioritise and will burn yourself out.

It's the same with "I'm a perfectionist" when they ask you about bad qualities - it's become a joke answer.

When you come to answer these questions you should always put in a comment about how you have recognised a failing and are addressing it - e.g. "I have found it hard to delegate tasks because I like to retain too much control. However, I'm now learning to delegate more effectively and realise that empowering staff and allowing them to do their job makes work better for everybody. Now I just monitor performance, rather than stand over their shoulders...."
