I think my hygienist was a sadist. She was lecturing me about my missing several cleanings. Sorry I'm poor and I just recently got the insurance. It was very painful. Then I got a migraine afterwards. Anyone else see this phenomenon? (Not asking for medical advise, just looking for commiseration)I got pissed off at her. My gums were this swollen and tender until YOU got after them, woman! She noticed I was saying ow ow ow ow, but she just kept being rougher. What is wrong with people?!

1. That is the main reason I've stopped going to dentists

the last cleaning I had was very similar to yours...the witch scraped harder with that metal pick when I wriggled or grunted ( by the way....are dentists living in the fucking STONE AGE? ) you would think that technology would have waved in something less painful to scrape plaque off of your teeth.

You have my sympathies....oh yeah, I have to pay $50.00 every time I go, and can't really afford that, either.

I have ULTRA sensitive gums and teeth....I decided 4 years ago that teeth cleaning was no longer worth the 2 days of pain -- and, I had very little build-up so they didn't have a lot to do, but they gouged my gums anyway!

I even tell them up front that I have sensitive teeth and gums and to please be gentle...I think they take it as some sort of sadistic challenge.

Duh, you are poking at them with a very sharp, pointy object!!

The worst was when I had a filling done. The whole side of my face was bruised. I have no idea why. It didn't really hurt, just looked like I'd been punched.

4. I missed going for two years

because I couldn't afford it and didn't have insurance. I had then numb my gums for that first cleaning. Since then, I go every 3 months for a cleaning and they are a breeze. I do have to pay for two of the four cleanings myself but it's worth it.

I went over 8 years between dentist's visits and the guy who finally saw me was amazed at how little work there was to be done on me. But even so, it was still very sore from where they really did have to do some scraping and whatnot.

Anyway, using that is much more comfortable - well worth the extra money that my insurance does not cover on that machine!

10. you need to massage your gums

When your gums aren't in the best shape, they get a sponge-like consistency,I was once told. That is when they bleed. When your gums are healthy, they have a firm smooth edge and it is easy to get to scrape your teeth without having to push back soft gum tissue. That soft tissue also provides a lot of nooks for anaerobic bacteria which is controlled by regular flossing and regular cleaning. If your gums are soft you can use one of the pointy gum rubber massages. Don't stick the point into your gums. Just use the side of the rubber to massage between your teeth and around them. Or you can use Stim-u-Dents or GUM Go-Between picks. Several times a day. Or more if you can.

That has happened to me, too, and afterward needed antibiotics as I got a gum infection.

If you have a water pic, make a mix of warm water and listerine (half and half), and gently lavage your gums on low a couple of times a day for the next several days.

My former dentist was always vigorous with cleanings, but one day, as I was waiting for my appointment, I overheard another patient complaining about some aspect of the treatment she had previously received.

When it was my turn the dentist seemed even more harsh than he usually was. I resented being the brunt of the bad mood caused by the other patient.

However, that dentist's fees were very reasonable, so I forgave him for one bad episode.

He retired, and now I have a very kind dentist, who unfortunately charges about forty percent more than my former dentist.

Oh well, dental care is brutally expensive. I think if I am gpoing to be able to support myself throughout my retirement, I better get false teeth.
