what Xmas gift would you give a grocery checker?

I've decided to honor those who help my life function by doing their mundane and exhausting jobs with efficiency and courtesy. Example: I want to give my regular grocery checker some kind of a little Christmas gift. He's the perfect checker -- everything is organized the bags by category, he's fast and courteous and never makes a mistake. I know nothing else about his life or interests except that he recently used up all his sick leave with some kind of illness perhaps related to chronic fatigue, and he tends 172 rose bushes as a volunteer in a public park.

I thought about a box of homemade cookies, but perhaps he doesn't eat sweets. A gift certificate? To where? What do you get for someone who is so unknown?

My son works in a grocery store and it's a fun job but they work hard for that money.

But his store gives them certificates for dinner at their choice of about five restaurants during the holiday.

You might want to write a letter of praise to the management also. He might get a raise!

5. Back when I was a bachelor, I gave a Christmas card to the checker I'd known for a while,

a very attractive lady about my age. We knew each other by name and she seemed attracted to me. So I took a chance and included my phone number in the card. She called me and we went out a few times. It was nice... B-)

11. I used to do that when I could afford it

Would leave cookies in the mailbox for the mailman. Made a pie for the trash guys (back when they actually got out and lifted the cans instead of those pick-up machines they have now), and left it, already sliced, in a covered box along with handwipes, napkins paper plates and forks. I was home one year when they came by and found the pie. I watched through the window...they had so much fun taking a break and eating blueberry pie.

Anyway, about that checker...


Movie tickets gift certificate (for two) along with a tin or plate of homemade goodies.
Even if he doesn't eat the goodies, I bet he will share them at work or the park.
