Office gift exchange - YEAH or NAY
Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 10:07 AM by LynneSin
Everyday when I come to work I see a box out front for "Toys for Tots".

I'd rather everyone just spend $20 for a few gifts to fill that box then to waste money on a stupid 'Secret Santa' where everyone ends up with $20 worth of useless crap to fill their junk drawers with.

Oh - I've already bought a ton of toys for Toys for Tots.

3. Because it's more fun to not have a clue
Anyhow just go to a discount store and get something nice for the co-worker at a low price, and spend the extra money on more toys for tots.

4. I'd rather just buy another gift for Toys for Tots at the discount store
The good lord blessed me with a job and all the things that I need. Why do I need to have office workers add to that bounty when so many others lack?

6. A resounding NAY
What is this fucking nonsense of treating work like a social gathering? Collections for Missy's baby shower, or Joe's birthday or Wanda's breast reduction... ridicuous.

I'm not at work to make friends, I'm there to make a living. The only thing I have in common with most of the people I work with is the fact that I work with them. I do have friends at work and those friends I may or may not purchase a gift for. But that's MY choice and not some stupid, feel-good, high-pressure, guilt-inducing, coffee-klatch, artificial bullshit gift exchange.

14. Preach it sister!
I get so damn tired of office politics where everyone acts so darn chummy and best friendy.... and you know any one of them would stab you in the back come promotion time or layoff time or new boss time, etc.

I'd rather just be stoically cordial with everyone, very good friends with a few, and not invest myself in every single social aspect of work. It's exhausting. Not to mention better for my bank account.

I'll make some fudge for my officemates, but I don't have the inclination to try to find some cheap trinket that's going to end up in the trash by the end of January anyway.

8. Here's a bad suggestion.
Buy a $20 toy for your secret giftee. Then loudly suggest it would be perfect for Toys For Tots.

15. LOL..I get your point...But
in a "Hot L-Z" in the Central Highlands,a long time ago, I learned about "comradeship" in what was our "office" for the next 27 hours.

Presently... our Faculty Christmas Party, here, is an orgasmic display of creativity, camaraderie, and just plain fun.

Last year, the Department Chair arrived in a Sleigh !

24. I adore my co-workers
I just prefer not having them (or myself) waste money on stupid stuff I'll toss in a junk drawer.

Now if a few office co-workers decide amongst themselves to exchange gifts - that's a different story.

22. We used to have that secret Santa shit here
I never joined in. About 7 or 8 years ago I was talking to the one woman here in the office and said that we should find a family and we can get them gifts, food, certificates..you know, a down and out family. Everyone liked the idea and we did it for a few years. Too much has gone on in the last year or two.

Of course when we first did it the woman I told my idea to got all the back slappin' and praise..LOL. Oh well, that is typical. It did feel much better to give to someone who needs it than to buy some lotto tickets for some shit for brains at the office.

Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 08:43 PM by Lisa
Like the 70% pure dark Belgian wafers, which are a big hit around here.

I'm actually rather glad that our office doesn't do "Secret Santa", because a lot of the time the gifts tend to end up as more clutter, regardless of good intentions. Sharing with everybody is a way to spread things around, without putting anyone on the spot.

And our office does have a drive to collect stuff for the food bank, at this time of year.

34. Nay for me.
I don't participate in such folderol. I don't care if others do it, I just don't have the energy to shop for a bunch of silly gifts. We don't have Toys for Tots (we used to, though), but I do give generously to the collection of items for the soldiers. I even contribute to the fund to send the packages to them. I really wish I could send them tickets to come home.

37. I say Yea, it's a fun tradition.
Why does it have to be $20 worth of useless crap? It can be lots of fun-- a DVD and microwave popcorn and jujubes, or a gift card to the movies, or to a nice restaurant. We always used to do the White Elephant gift exchange and there were some fun, neat things passed around.
