Calling it a "drunken, stupid thing," a DeForest man admitted breaking into a town of Burke sex shop last month and stealing several blow-up sex dolls, among them a $270 model that talks.

Among the items that were found was a Linn Thomas talking love doll, priced at $269.99, which is shaped to resemble the porn star of the same name. According to one review by an Internet retailer, the 5-foot-3-inch doll vibrates and blurts out recorded encouragements to its user.

The story is good for a laugh, although I think it crosses the journalistic line in describing the final item in detail.

5. Why do we get embarrassed when people make complete fools of themselves?

I have always wondered that. Even people we don't necessarily like. Why do we care? There must be a psychological study in there somewhere.

8. That's a good question.

I think people have very mixed emotions in such cases. Mine are these when I see someone caught publicly in such a situation. In no particular order:

"Sucks to be you /I'm glad I'm not you, whatever else I've done in my life"- A sort of Darwinistic heirarchy kicks in.

"OMG, how stupid can a person possibly be?" Which is the more judgemental thought, along with "ha, ha"

"Poor guy"- Pity because given enough perspective, you can see that he may otherwise be a gentle, lonely guy who got soused & wasn't within shouting distance of his mind at the time.

"Brotherhood & humanity"- Only a member of our species is capable of such actions and embarrasment for them may be an atavistic reaction.

I could be wrong.

12. Well yes, but we are most empathetic when we feel someone doesn't deserve what they are getting.

I am thinking of the situations where someone has been truly stupid or even evil and they suffer embarrassment or pain. We still cringe for them.
