Seems like all of them only ship to their own states anymore. I'm in Indiana - no one ships here.

1. I recall reading something about that.
The problem is alcohol distribution and the laws that define that. I think in many cases the Distributors do not want to give up the exclusive market they have. The independent vineyards want to sell directly to the consumers, but the distributors don't want to give that up and have paid lawmakers to retain that setup.

3. Yep, that's what I remember hearing
Otherwise, you could hear about the most obscure libation ever, look it up on the interwebs, order, and presto, have some right in your hand.

*sigh*

4. Ah. That makes some sense
I used to order through Hi Time Wines, but they no longer ship outside California.

6. Related note
Budweiser has written or cosponsored 2/3rds of the liquor laws in the states. If they don't want you to have X, you won't have it, there you have it.

This is my somewhat local establishment that ships beer...

2. they aren't allowed to

it is a Felony, under Indiana law, to ship alcohol from outside the state.

many states do, in fact, allow this, and the Supreme Court ruled that states only have to treat all companies the same. so any state that has internal shipping has to allow external shipping as well.

here's a map (courtesy of Wine.com) that lists states that allow shipping:

7. It's because of your state laws.
Some states will license out of state retailers, usually for a hefty fee. Some states make it very difficult, if not impossible, unless the liquor seller has an agreement with an authorized distributor in the state.

I hear this stuff all the time at local wineries when tourists inquire about shipping.

8. A friend of mine tried that
and she was told she couldn't ship liquor thru the mail. She ended up calling Big Red (Indiana franchise - is it where you are?) and they put together her order (a case of kriek - Belgian fizzy cherry beer.) Then Big Red called and the person who got the gift had to pick it up at the store.

You might want to call the post office first?

Otherwise, look online for a liquor store in the city where you want to send.

9. Wine Woot does

Not to all states though. When they actually offer wine for sale, they list on the front page what states they are able to ship to.

Note: Today is unusual, in that they aren't actually selling wine. It's what they are calling "gift week" - selling items related to wines. Here is a page that shows the last years offerings: http://wine.woot.com/Forums/

What is Wine Woot? Kind of like www.woot.com (which is for gadgets and cool stuff), but for wine instead. Here, I'll let them tell you about it (they've got a pretty good sense of humor! )

What is Wine.Woot.com?
We were all pretty despondent when we couldn’t work out the logistics for massage.woot.com. We started to question the very idea of spinning off another new dot-woot. But then woot.com offered our Rinfrescante wine and we were positively deluged with inquiries from friends and family pleading for more (of course the cheapskates wanted more – they got it for free). This was enough “market research” for us. We reactivated our wine-industry hookup and wine.woot.com was conceived.

Then we had to figure out if we’d completely lost our minds. It turns out wine and electronic gadgets really aren’t so different, commercially speaking. Both industries run on fast product cycles. Gadgeteers and oenophiles alike have strong opinions, so we let them sound off in our community forums. And because winemakers make marketing predictions far in advance of product release – just like electronics manufacturers – wine inventory is equally subject to overstock, excess, and end-of-life opportunities.

So every week, wine.woot.com will uncork a sweet new wine deal. For now, if you run into any bugs on the site, just think of this as the beta version. That sounds cooler anyway. Like our uncouth, barely-civilized older stepbrother, woot.com, here we’ll offer one-time-only prices that put the rest of the Internet to shame. Shame on you, Internet!

edit to give better page for previous offerings.

10. I just plugged in the zip 46201 (Indianapolis)
for Spec's Online (a Texas liquor store) and it said delivery was available but only for non-alcoholic products.

Maybe it's time to learn how to distill on your own :D

12. I think there are too many differences in state alcohol regulations...
...that may even go back to the old "revinooin'" days. Maybe try talking to a manager at a major liquor chain - they might be able to have a store in the state of the recipient deliver so that state lines don't have to be crossed.

15. Our P.O. would not accept liquor carton as parcel.
Miz t. had a some Christmas presents to ship to a family we're friends with. Packed them in a box we got from the liquor store. I think it was a Barardi box.
P.O. clerk said they would not accept anything packed in a liquor box.
?????????
Had to either wrap it in something or pack it in another box.
