Have You Ever Been The Lucky "Caller-Number-Seven"...
on any radio call-in contests? What did you win?

In 1977, my junior year in high school, my favorite top-40 radio station was WGH... and an AM station at that! I won concert tickets to see "Earth Wind and Fire".

Speed dialing? What was that? I quick-dialed those numbers by hand!!

2. I won tickets to see the Police at the Whiskey in Hollywood
It was for their first tour.Good show, all I knew of them was that stupid "Roxanne" song, but , I was amazed at what good musicians they were.

I won tix to a Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Richie Vallens "tribute" show. The odd thing was that I was caller #1 AND #7...

5. My sister and I did
She was the one on the phone dialing. She made it through as the designated caller. We both jumped up screaming in excitement... and the phone riped out of the jack in the wall. She hadn't even told them her name, yet. What a bummer. It was for tickets to a sold out concert.

6. I won $101.50 from a station in San Diego
when I lived there, then two months later a weekend for two at the La Jolla Village Inn, but I had to work for that. Had to beat two other contestants naming the song and artist of a rock classic which had been converted to "elevator music". I won a pair of Aerosmith tickets the next year. All without speed dial.
Now I live in Texas...I won an order of sopapillas (sp.?) from Enrique's. With speed dial.

I wonder what ever happened to her. Or to all the "Womyn's music" that my self described "militant lesbian" friends used to like. I think there was a Meg Christiansen, but I knew the later period singer Pranc who had been in the Punk band "Nervous Gender."

20. I Adore Lloyd Cole.
He's one of my all-time favorites. I have just about everything he's done.

I saw him in 98 when he was touring with Jill Sobule. Awesome show.

10. The local oldies station was doing a reminiscence for Clarence Nash,
the voice of Donald Duck. If you were the lucky caller, you got a plush doll with the words "You quack me up!" on his sailor blouse. I was the lucky caller who got the doll. I ended up giving it to a friend of mine, who loved it.

11. Several times, actually
Let's see...

- LP Single of a Krokus song.
- $103
- Scarf (winter kind) and a chance at a car - I was 17 and they wouldn't let me try to start it. Had to get my mom to do it.
- Pick from the grab box (t-shirt) and a chance at the big prize...
- The big prize - They came out and dumped a truckload of office-type garbage in my dad's front yard. There was (supposedly) $10,000 in radio money in it and I had 3 minutes to dig for it. I found $271 and they gave me another $2500 or so. (I think it was rigged that way.)
- $103
- t-shirt and a chance at a trip to Paris (France, not Tennessee)
- $665

14. Symphony tickets
CBC-Radio 1

I've won several times because there's a skill testing question that actually requires you to know something about symphonic music, plus I've got the number on speed-dial.

What's especially nice is that they're damn good seats. Usually I end up in the nosebleed section (and yes, I'm prone to nosebleeds).

15. No..but
I've been the guy on the other end of the line when the radio pigs (did you know that's what contest callers are called in the biz?) called in to win. Or called in to ask if it was time to call in to win? Or called to ask WHAT they had won, before we even ran the friggin' contest. Or called in to ask if I "could make a request?" (OK, BAM, you're a request). My real favorites were those who tried to cheat to win.

There are lots of disturbed people calling radio stations. But then there's even more disturbed people working at radio stations.
