back. Father dying in NC with two sisters bearing the horrific load. I return this weekend to give a bit of relief. Dad is no longer himself . . . nasty, pinching, slapping and cursing. Wrote this this morning (how my last week has been!:

retinal tear, bell ringing head, wake from dead, bright shattering nonsense of 15-hour drives, flights and rental cars, death rattle for months, crazy old man in fast decline (it is relative, even now), sisters bearing the horrific burden, back-breaking trudge to only one sad end, the mountains, vast inhuman space, howling wind between here and formerly, the absolute without price, snow and ice, driving back through a storm that shut down the Carolinas, two heart-over-wheel drives followed by fourteen hours to teach a class in which my eye filled with threads of blood reading from "Democratic Vistas" like a lock of hair suddenly thrown in my eyes, tangled strands of blackness, and I lost maybe 30-50% of sight in my right eye, as they say, within seconds and the students never knew a thing cause I'd missed so many classes, I wasn't about to stop, or cause I wouldn't let them think anything was spinning increasingly out of control before their very ears and eyes, so all they might have seen if they were looking at all was a prof trying to brush away non-existent hair, or a fly, as my eye filled with blood . . . and if that ain't love, then I don't know
