1. You can download the old WMP for Mac, but there is a better way...
Download Flip4Mac, for free, which is a QuickTime component that will allow you to play .wmv files within the QuickTime player. In my experience it is much better than Microsoft's old WMP for Mac. Go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

2. And it works flawlessly. THIS time, you can trust Microsoft.
This is one piece of software they got exactly right.

3. Microsoft didn't write it, though. Telestream wrote it on their own, and
once it came out, Microsoft decided not to maintain Windows Media Player for Mac any more, and just suggest to Mac users to download Flip4Mac instead. I don't know if Microsoft is paying Telestream anything for it, but they certainly should.

5. I swear by it
For added pleasure, buy Quicktime Pro

You can convert WMV files into MOV files for better playback

7. QT Pro is worth it, you think?
Just wondering. I've never used more than the free version.

8. You're welcome. I don't think .wmv is a good format for people to send you
video files, if you are going to use them in projects such as iMovie, FinalCutPro or iDVD, etc.. The .wmv format is a highly compressed format, and a lot of data is thrown out when the .wmv file is created. You can never get that data back, even by converting the .wmv file to a .mov file, it won't make the quality any better. If you want people to send you video files that you are going to use in programs such as iMovie, FinalCutPro or iDVD, ask them to save them and send them to you as .mov files, preferably with the DV-NTSC codec. The files will be much larger than the .wmv files, but the image quality will be much better, as all the original data recorded by the camera is still there.
