I JUST finished moving to Chicago! (finally....)
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 10:46 AM by RandomKoolzip
This whole excercise has been three weeks of nothing but high level stress and lifting heavy objects. And the weather outside IS indeed frightful (but I kinda like it....I love snow, but not bitter, face-slapping cold wind..."You take the good, you take the bad, you take the rest and then you have: the facts of life, the facts of life) Anyways, now I'm here, living in Chitown, and I need a job really badly. I MIGHT have a job as a cook at 321 Chicago, a restaurant on Randolph and LaSalle, but it's not definite. I need a job at a high-end restaurant somewhere reachable by the L. A restaurant that hires Gringos. I'm a skilled cook, and have lots of experience, and need to be paid a livable wage.

Anybody got any tips about high-end joints that need a gringo cook?

In any case, I'm glad to be here, and psyched to meet some fellow DUers! I KNOW there's a bunch here.

I can't be spending too much time on DU like I used to, maybe an hour or so every few days, but I could really use a "hello" or two to cut some of the stress. And then I'll be off in a little while to look for a job.

Glad to be back on DU! Keep up the fight!

1. Welcome to Chicagoland, RKZ
We expect you at the next gathering. No excuses! I'm afraid we will have to insist.

Really, we have some really fun and friendly Chicagoland Duer's. Looking forward to meeting sometime in the near future, probably when this stupid winter breaks.

Welcome, again.

3. Welcome to the Windy City!
The only thing I can suggest about a job is maybe the Chicago Reader, a free local paper here. It has a big employment section.

Chicago's a nice city. You'll like it. :-)

4. Go to a book store or record shop....

And pick up a Reader. It's a free weekly that comes out on Thursday afternoons. Lots of jobs in restaurants listed.

I routinely walk past the 321 daily. Lot's of restaurants on Randolph west of the Kennedy now too. Oh hell, there's restaurants everywhere.

Don't worry about getting a job here. If you can't get a job in Chicago, you can't get a job anywhere. I've never had a problem, no matter how bad the economy has been.

Welcome to town. Spring is right around the corner. There's nothing as glorious as Spring, Summer and Autumn in Chicago. You just have to grunt out Winter.

BTW, you picked a helluva time to arrive. Winter Storm watch tonight. 6 to 8 inches of snow expected.

7. Thanks. you mugs!
I mean it.

Yeah. I used the Reader, the Tribune, even the Onion, to look for a job, and there really was pretty slim pickin's. Now, I'm gonna just pound the pavement in search of wages.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! 6 to 8 inches of snow?! Sweet!

5. Welcome
The weather is especially bad these days...

As for the job - check the Reader. It is the free alt-weekly paper (new edition comes out today, in fact). Many high-end restaurants will be reachable by the el (note the spelling - you'll seem more like a native).

The Reader's web site is www.chireader.com and you'll find copies at every coffee place, bar, many restaurants, etc.

Where are you from and where have you moved to (which neighborhood I mean)?

8. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT!!
On your travels, get thee to 69 West Washington Bvld, suite 800, and register to vote. The IL Primary is March 16, and you have to retister by February 17 (I think) in order to be able to vote.

And if you haven't chosen a US Senate candidate, might I suggest one:

9. Welcome to town!!
I have a friend that owns some greasy spoons downstate but other than that I can't help much except to suggest craigslist.

Just wait for spring and summer along the lakeshore, there may be no more beautiful urban setting in the world.

12. where do you live?
our tenant just at a job at a new "Macaroni Grill" that just opened up, far north(maybe not exactly "high"-end, but it ain't mcdonald's either).

do you have any specific cuisine in mind?

pick up a reader, either tonite or tomorrow afternoon, depending on where you live in the city...record stores, bars, libraries, etc...

the Sunday Chicago Tribune is another must for job-seekers.

But I have been told that the job market for high-end cooks is brutal in Chicago right now. But good luck.
