Madonna, Mellencamp Newest to Rock Hall (of Lame)
CLEVELAND - The Material Girl is about to become a Hall of Famer. The ever-evolving Madonna was announced as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on Thursday along with John Mellencamp, The Ventures, Leonard Cohen and The Dave Clark Five.

A panel of 600 industry figures selected the five acts to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 10 in New York.

"The 2008 inductees are trailblazers - all unique and influential in their genres," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman said in a statement. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll itself."

To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.

Not one of those acts can hold a candle to Leonard Cohen.

2. So do I
and it's hard to think of any acts that started in the 80s that are more deserving.

4. So Rush is not deserving to be in a ROCK and ROLL Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame is a joke. It's a Musician Popularlity Hall of Fame.

As I've said before - I've always believed in the talent of Madonna even though some of that talent is her ability to re-invent and promote herself. I just think this whole "Rock & Roll" hall of fame is a damn joke since clearly they don't want to put certain Rock Bands in it

8. I never said a word about Rush
but personally, I never liked them.

But I don't get to vote for the R&R Hall of Fame, so you'll have to ask somebody else.

12. Sorry, it's just an anger issue for me with this Hall of Fame
I figured of the 4 bands being ripped - Rush is probably the one that is most deserving (the other 3 are Yes, Moody Blues and King Crimson).

The guy running the Hall of Fame doesn't like Prog Rock. The only other Prog Rock band in the Hall of Fame is Pink Floyd - but let's face it, "The Wall" and "DSOTM" are the reasons Pink Floyd is in there.

29. Madonna was extremely infuential in the 80's and deserves recognition for that.
But calling her "rock n roll" is a huge stretch. She's not the first non-rocker to be inducted by any means, but some of the others, whether it was Johnny Cash or Grandmaster Flash, at least you could point to how they influenced rock n roll artists that followed.

Those who were influenced by Madonna probably weren't rock n roll either. At this rate, they'll be inducting Britney Spears in another 15 years, and I really would have to projectile vomit at that one.

34. Madonna was extremely PAINFUL in the 80s. Doesn't write music, needed auto-tuning, etc.
Ponderous, fucking ponderous. Look to Laurie Anderson if you want a successful, influential, and SMART woman in music. Or Kate Bush. Neither of them have ever made me want to tear out my ears...

3. I've never understood the Madonna thing
and I grew up right in the middle of it. I just never got it. I can understand other popstars and for different reasons see why they sold but Madonna I just have never been able to understand it.

15. I would suspect John Mellencamp
The Johnny Cougar was kinda forced upon him by a producer in his early years. He never did like that much. Small town boy done good. I believe he is more then deserving of the honor, as Madonna is not deserving at all.

Pretty damn progressive, too.

And the DC5?!

And the Ventures?!

17. Mellencamp's
statue or whatever they have will be right at home in the hall. He is the only one I do at Karaoke night. I do fondly recall the DC5 and the Ventures from way back in the 60's. My brother and I would argue about who was better, DC5 or Beatles. Wonder if any of them are still alive.

18. Dave Clark is still alive, kicking, and very rich.
Denis Payton died a while back.

Mike Smith got hurt very badly in an accident, a spinal cord injury. In 24/7 health care.

Lenny Davidson and Rick Huxley are still alive and well.

20. Mellencamp is incredibly talented
I don't think it's fair to hold the whole Cougar thing against him. Some of his stuff was out and out pop but he's also written a lot of beautiful thought provoking pieces of music. Sure some of his stuff was pop radio but on his albums you see a lot more depth. No he's not Leonard Cohen, who is fucking brilliant, but Mellencamp has a body of work that sure as hell is a lot more deserving of recognition than Ma-fucking-donna.

11. Maybe Robert Plant will get into the COuntry Hall of Fame
His latest single with Allison Kraus is getting regular rotation on CMT. My mother even knows about that CD and she listens to nothing but Country music stations

BTW - mom thought Robert Plant had a lovely voice and wanted to know if there were any other of his music she might like.

I've never cared for Madonna's music, even when she was at the height of her popularity. She's not an especially talented singer, either, imo, but at least making music keeps her from making any more movies.

I have to say that I'm really happy The Dave Clark Five is getting in, though--maybe this'll motivate them to re-release some of their music. I have a "Best of" compilation, but all but the last few songs are mono. :(

by Sha na na in 1970. If anybody has a youtube with more energy than this, please post it! To my ears it sounds like punk rock.

Madonna isn't rock.

Of course, with that name, The Cure would never get in, and this is a good thing.
