The flawed strategy of "Night of the Living Dead."
Either version--why were they so hellbent that their only two options were the basement (brilliant W-esque strategy there) or maintaining the first floor? The farmhouse had an upstairs, and they had the raw tools needed to dismantled the staircase (just shatter it into kindling one step at a time if needed), so why not go upstairs and wait for the National Guard?

Sorry, this has always pissed me off about that movie.

1. Lots of things are wrong with the strategies in NotLD
Now, they did get smarter in Dawn and Day.

There's a new comic out right now called "The Walking Dead". It just featured the most BRILLIANT strategy for a zombie story. They smeared zombie goo on their bodies so they smelled like zombies.

That's using your head instead of caving into fear.

2. up is always the bad idea. less escape routes.
susceptible to fire, starvation, etc
they didnt know it would be over in the morning. once they are below you they can attack from any point rather than just through the entrances (walls are harder to get through than floorboards)

3. you are so right!
we should do a remake and this time try that strategy!

might make for a boring movie, though... plus there's little hope for escape from such a position...

as long as no one does anything stupid like shooting at a gas pump with a shotgun, things should turn out alright...

4. Actually, the best strategy
would've been to kill that fat white guy idiot hiding in the basement at the beginning of the movie right away. Gah, that guy pissed me off. But I guess that was the point of his character.
