I was it by a drunk driver this morning
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 01:49 PM by lizziegrace
11:30am and only a few miles from my house. I was in the left lane of a 4 lane highway (heavily traveled area) and I guess going 45 (in a 45) wasn't fast enough. He slammed into the back of my car doing at least 60. I pulled into a turn lane, he moved into the right hand lane and took off. Never even stopped.

I had memorized his license plate when I saw he wasn't stopping but by the time they switched me from the county Sheriff's department to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, I'd forgotten it. A girl stopped and said she'd followed him for a few miles and he was obviously impaired. She handed me a paper with his license plate #, a make/model and color and the info on a bumper sticker.

The officer said he was going to track this asshole down once we filed the report.

My fear is that he's going to kill someone before they find him.

I'm aching all over, have a terrible headache. Lelapin's here so if I need to go to the ER I can.

:(

5. Hey Lizzie
If you can afford it, or have insurance you should really go get checked out. You may have whiplash or other injuries. Additionally, it sounds like you have enough info to nail this guy so he should be liable for your medical costs associated with this.

Hope you are ok and this whole situation turns out fine as well!

9. Go to the ER
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 01:05 PM by Whoa_Nelly
As is the case with most traffic accidents is that you WILL feel worse over the next 24 hours.

you were rear-ended...not good...your neck, your back, your torso, and more, have been put through a trauma.

Please go to the ER now. Don't wait until you feel worse. You can always go back again tomorrow if things are worse.

You have car insurance, and the drunk asshole probably does, too

Please go in now...if not for your body at the moment, then for insurance purposes and documentation.

You know I :loveya: you!

60. The 16,000+ people that died last year would agree.
I was amazed to read the 40% of all traffic fatalities were alcohol related. There is no telling how many are injured, some for life due to alcohol related crashes.

It may not stop some but it would make people think twice about getting behind the wheel. I have heard of another system that detects alcohol in perspiration. Maybe the steering wheel could be made of that material?

In my youth I was guilty of driving a couple of times when I shouldn't have. Now that I am older I see how incredibly stupid that was. I am glad I never killed or injured anyone, I wasn't even caught by the police.

BTW- Thank you for serving our country despite the current leadership. You guys do a great job making sure the Marines get to where they need to go! (from a former Marine)

Of course you know I am just kidding, you guys are great. Go Navy!

I know it's an expense, but your health and well being must come first! My mom and I were in a bad accident probably 30 years ago; she didn't go to the hospital to get checked out and has had neck problems ever since.

I am SO GLAD you're OK, but please, please, please go to the hospital and get checked out. If he slammed into you going that fast, you really need to go see a doctor.

Besides, you'd probably have a major shit-fit if this had happened to Lelapin and she didn't go to the hospital, so be a good example - think of the children! I don't mean to be flippant, but... just GO!

38. Then you have more experience with this than I do, but what happened with me
was no pain at all at the time of the accident, pain and stiffness the next day, and much more pain and almost no ability to bend or turn the day after that. Gradual improvement thereafter, but I've been having periodic pain and stiffness ever since, 12-odd years later. Having limited common sense, I never went to a doctor nor did I sue anybody. I did invest in a slant pillow, which helped a lot.

83. Some chiropractors are ambulance chasers, some are great healers
Thirty years ago when I was in my mid-twenties, I injured my lower back, when it "folded" too fast trying a "gymnastics" type trick I used to do when I was a kid. People who've been in car accidents in the back seat when cars had only lap belts have similar injuries. For a year or two I couldn't stand up straight after sitting for an hour or so, due to back spasms. I quit working as an LVN because of lower back pain. When I moved back to California a friend told me that she thought her chiropractor could help me. After the first treatment and a perceivable shift in my vertebrae during the adjustment, I felt as though my legs could move freely and no back pain! There were three chiropractors in that office, and I asked if they needed another assistant. I worked there for nine years until my husband and I moved.
Anyone who has persistent pain should ask around and find a good chiropractor, a few adjustments could bring you welcome relief.

50. Hi sweetie!
No, I didn't go to the doctor. I'm a little achy but since this is the fourth time I've been hit from behind... It will pass. I was going 45 when he hit me doing at least 60. Several things saved me - no one close in front of me, I wasn't making a turn, and I wasn't completely stopped. Otherwise, Lelapin would be writing this while I was in the hospital.

I was truly blessed that the girl heading to Michigan took down all the necessary information and stopped to help. There were dozens and dozens of cars on that stretch of Hwy23 and no one else bothered.

I'm angry that the deductible will probably be coming out of my pocket. I'm angry that I'll have to take time away from work, etc to deal with getting my car repaired and I'm lucky to have such problems. It could have been so much worse.

82. Your auto insurance should cover any medical costs as well
as any time lost from work because of injuries. If you haven't done so already, call your insurance agent and report the accident and find out what is covered. I am assuming you have no-fault insurance so they are the ones who will cover your injuries and any damage to your car.

Just because you were fine the other three times this happened, doesn't mean you are ok now. I highly recommend you are seen asap and xrayed because if problems crop up a month from now you will need to be able to prove they are related to this accident otherwise you'll be paying for any treatment through your medical insurance with all of the accompanying copays and deductibles instead of through your auto insurance, which will cover everything 100%. Your auto insurance should also pay for the initial exam.

Been there, done that. I was rear-ended 14 years ago while at a stand-still by a car going about 15-20 mph. That was just enough to give me back problems for quite a while and my auto insurance (state farm) covered all of it with no change to my premium. They also gave me money for my car, which they totalled (it was an old beater). State Farm paid for my ER visit and all of my chiropractor visits.

I got hit like that and didn't get care, it took months and thousands of $$$$ to relieve the pain after not seeking treatment

55. I am so sorry, lizziegrace.
I hope you're quickly on the mend, and that the bastard is caught and written up for DWI, reckless driving, an accident and failing to stop to render aid. He should be placed in jail for at least a couple of years.

63. WOW, I sure hope you seek medical attention
This could very well turn into something more serious. Please consider the offers by your local area DUers to take you to the hospital. You should get checked out within 24 hours of the accident for documentation. You'll need it, believe me.
I was rear ended by a Jeep and a ford truck back in 93. I didn't go to the hospital, but the next day I went in to seek medical attention and advice. It helped out in the long run. I had whiplash and still have problems to this very day.

Glad you didn't suffer a worse fate. Even tho you have a universal bullseye on the back of your car, at least the gods must be watching over you.

65. Oh no!
I'm so sorry that happened. But it sounds like they've got enough info to nail the sorry so-and-so.

Please take everyone's advice and go to a doctor. This happened to my ex, and it took months of rehab before his neck/back stopped hurting. Get some documentation in case this doesn't clear up quickly.

But I hope it does.

67. Awwww sweetie!
I'm going to echo a bazillion others here when I say to at least get checked out to document everything in case this is the first time you actually have serious repercussions from one of these!

What the hell is going on the last few days? I went out for a little while today, and was driving home and saw some guy hit a car parked in front of a house!

Please let some of the local DUers and LeLapin help you out, and let us know how you're doing!

Fucking drunk driving shitbags.

I hope your pain goes away soon, and that they nail the asshole to the wall.

Of course, they won't - they'll wait until he has 10 or 15 drunk driving offenses and then maybe do something.

73. Glad you're o.k.... i've been there, too... f*ckin' drunks...
I share with you now The Story of Sammy K... , Idiot at large:

Sammy K. was a young man having too much of a good time, and in a bit of a hurry.

Sammy K. thundered along US 52 in rural NC at around 80mph--oblivious to his surroundings--at around 3am in January 1993.

Sammy K met me on a clear straightaway, where he veered across the center line abruptly, and his large Ford work truck collided head-on with my nearly-new SUV, which until that moment had been going 60mph in the other direction.

After impact, Sammy's truck spun off the road somehow and into the woods, where it rested against a tree... my SUV miraculously stayed upright and on the pavement, though it was spun completely around twice (according to eyewitness account, and the tread/rim scrapes on the pavement), with all 4 tires blown and the rims shredded.

Ironically, the only eyewitnesses to this scene, other than Sammy K. and me, were TWO NC State Troopers, who had been parked with lights off in an adjacent church parking lot, working on the night's paperwork. One of them's radar gun alerted them to the speeding Sammy, but neither had activated lights or sirens when he collided with me.

I managed to extract myself from my vehicle on my own, much to the shock of Trooper A... Trooper B was trying to get Sammy out of his, without much success.

Special equipment had to be called in to extract the unconscious Sammy K.

When the door was pried off, and Sammy K. was removed and taken to the hospital, it was discovered the seat's brackets had broken, and the officers on the scene found many wonderful surprises!

Guns... all either unregistered, or previously reported stolen!
Cocaine... around a kilo, all wrapped up in a nice, neat bundle!
Marijuana... a few lbs in a trash bag!

At the hospital, Sammy K.'s "blood alcohol" content was measured.
.2 - in a state where the limit had already been lowered to .08.

The quantity of drugs, plus the firearms, made it a Federal case, and i went to the trial, sitting quietly in the back, trying not to laugh.

If Sammy K. hadn't been having such a good time that night, he would have never been in that courtroom, much less STILL in federal custody, as he will be for a minimum of another 5 years.
