I guess he ain't poor no more

PORTLAND, Ore. - Brian Sean Griffith, a former bodyguard for scandal-plagued figure skater Tonya Harding who helped plan the 1994 attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan, has died. He was 40.

Griffith died Wednesday of what his doctor said were natural causes, according to the Washington County medical examiner's office. Griffith was born Shawn Eckardt but changed his name after the attack in an attempt to put the incident behind him.

Griffith, of Beaverton, was Harding's bodyguard when the Portland-born skater competed for a spot on the U.S. Olympic figure skating team.

An assailant cracked Kerrigan's knee, though she recovered to win a silver medal at the Olympics. Days after the attack, Griffith confessed, detailing a plan that he and Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, had hatched.
