Fellow homosexuals: Anyone else seeing the X-Men movie parallels?
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 07:32 PM by Cannikin
To our current struggle? Every time I read a bit more bad news, I hear Magneto saying 'The war has begun' (from X2). I've wondered if Bryan Singer (the director) was gay. I know Ian Mckellan and Allan Cumming (nightcrawler) both are....I really have no point here.....Just wondering if anyone else had noticed.

1. Yes
Bryan Singer is gay. And Jewish. The parallels have been discussed in interviews I've read with him.

2. yes, they've all talked about the parallels....
....you can look at the documentaries on the X2 DVD and all the cast and singer mention the gay rights parallel (usually in the same breath as other minority struggles.)

and, yes, bryan singer is gay.

And I'm glad to hear a confirmation, so I know it wasnt just wishful thinking! hehe And he's a trekkie like me, and he almost brought back Battlestar Galactica, which I like....so obviously we're made for each other! lol I just heard Cathy Bates saying 'I'm your number one fan.'

I kept telling my partner that all of the parallels couldnt be coincedence, but he said I was just trying to read to much into it!

5. I hate going "duh"
But that's been a part of the reason that the X-Men have been popular for over 20 years. It's not just homosexuals, but anyone from any fringe group.

(Grow up in a RW neighborhood as a Pagan and tell me it isn't the same...I dare yah.)

Its condescending and hurts my poor little feelings....at least it would if I had any feelings...lol

I never read comic books (couldnt ever find them in my small home town), so the movies are my only reference to the xmen history.

(I've slept with as many men as I have women...I just haven't slept with anyone for 10 years or so.)

9. Whilst not in your target audience ...
... it struck me and Mrs.Nihil that the comment in X-Men 2 suggesting
"Have you tried not being a mutant?" was so obviously a dig ...

We have a fair number of gay friends and so many have related that
type of comment (from family members) that it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Sadly, we also know people who've experienced rejection from parents
incapable of understanding (like Jason's father) that it isn't
something that needs to be "cured" or "reformed".

I like films that work on several levels.

(Hope you didn't mind me joining in :hi:)

10. It gets better
In the comics, somebody develops a virus that kills only mutants... only they end up discovering it's lethal to non-mutants too, only it kills more slowly then.
