I don't have a very good feeling about this. Not at all.

This is the gal that was abducted and the abduction was later discovered to be recorded on a security video.

I don't know the details of the arrest, but the suspect has refused to talk thus far. Very ominous sign if you ask me. Grim.

3. Doubtful
They may have to swallow their pride and cut a deal with the suspect to find the body.

4. Interesting comment from that FBI guy they always interview
can't think of his name right now.

He claims the suspect is going through a period of negotiation in his mind right now, like weighing his options for what's in it for me. So, if he has no live child to hand over, his options are pretty limited.

I really think if that girl were alive they would have found her when they arrested him.

I hate these stories.

5. She's probably not alive.

I feel so sorry for her family and friends. I read an article that said her stepfather went with the police into the suspect's home, and he left in tears after viewing some evidence.

This reminds me of the San Diego case with the Van Dam child. Did you guys know that just as prosecution was ready to cut a deal with Westerfield to locate the body, as he was ready to confess and tell where he put the body--literally his lawyer had summoned the prosecutor to the room to hear his confession--the prosecutor received a call: word came in that two hikers had found her body. Deal was off.

This guy who kidnapped the Brucia child KNOWS the clock is ticking on his deal-making time. I hope no deal will have to be made.

Edited to add this clip from an FBI expert:

Fortunately, cases where a complete stranger has abducted a child are just a tiny fraction of the number of annual missing children cases. Citing FBI and other law enforcement statistics, Schwartz says that only 200-300 cases nationwide involve children taken by a complete stranger. Those case are the most perilous for the victims – 75 percent of the time, the child is dead within three hours.

6. I didn't know that about the Van Dam case
I hate to see deals made in these cases too.

I wonder what it was the father saw in that house? Some article of clothing perhaps? That wouldn't be a good sign.

This guy was a father with his own kids. Wonder what made him snap? A pedophile maybe?

What a sick, sick world we live in.

7. See my edited post above about stranger abductions
Yes, a very good friend of mine is from San Diego and her best guy friend was one of the hikers who found Danielle's body. Sad thing, it is.

The statistics I posted in the earlier post show that the Brucia child is probably not alive. So sad.

I believe that the suspect in the Brucia case had recently been separated from his wife. He had commited an earlier abduction attempt, too. He also had a drug problem.

12. The death penalty is far too good for that monster.
It wouldn't bother me at all if they tied the child-rapist-and-killer to a chair, gave her father and stepfather baseball bats, and then, oh, went to lunch for half an hour.

Not one damn bit.

13. This SOB is why it is hard to be anti Death Penalty
But, Anti DP is still what I am. Although, I do believe that this guy deserves life without parole, in solitary confinement.

17. Yes, it's difficult not to want revenge... but DP is revenge only...
At the moment of death, his punishment ends. He's actual punishment time is LESS than someone who serves 10 years for, say... reckless DUI manslaughter.

After he's dead, he ceases to care. Even for the folks who believe he will be punished in an "afterlife"... it's my understanding that all he needs to do is "accept JC as his lord-and-savior and ask for forgiveness" and he'll be welcomed into the "Kingdom of God".

I don't believe in gods myself, but those who find comfort in believing that the killer goes to hell, will find their comfort thwarted if the killer seeks forgiveness from gods. Again, the "eternal punishment" that was expected becomes an eternal reward because heavenly existence is supposed be far greater than anything we can imagine on Earth, yes?

My heart sank when I saw the posture and the solemn faces as the Sarasota police were preparing for their news conference. They had not spoken a word as they waited for the rest of the networks to "cut-in" at the appointed time. I just knew what the announcement was going to be... so sad... heartbreaking.

I like the idea of solitary confinement you mentioned.

18. I agree.
I want people like him punished, not put to sleep like a beloved pet. Life at hard labor without the possibility of parole, every day until they draw their last breath.

20. I'm pretty sure you are aware of the fate of those who harm children
when they are sent to prison, considering your line of work.

I hate to say it, but putting him to sleep is too good for him. Let him suffer for a good, long time.

Her family certainly is.

19. Agreed.
Part of me wants to kill him myself, slowly, painfully, in public, etc. But it's not right.

Stick him in an 8x10 cell, alone, for the rest of his life. Miserable POS mother f*.

Stick him into General Population. They'll take care of him. Remember those guys don't like people who harm kids...It's like honor amongh thieves or whatnot.

14. Body found behind church near carwash in Sarasota
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nat-gen/2004/feb/06/020602125.html

The body of an 11-year-old girl whose abduction was captured by a surveillance camera was found in a church parking lot, and a mechanic has been charged with her murder, officials said Friday.

Sarasota County Sheriff Bill Balkwill declined to say where Carlie Brucia's body was found, but a law enforcement source close to the investigation said it was found between 12:45 a.m. and 1 a.m. Friday outside a church near the car wash where she was taken.

He said Joseph P. Smith, 37, has been charged with the girl's murder. Smith is believed to be the tattooed man in a mechanic's shirt who was seen in a car wash surveillance video leading Carlie away by the arm Sunday evening, authorities said.

Investigators found the body after negotiations with Smith, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Earlier, authorities had said Smith was not cooperating.

22. I agree. But since the law says no one is guilty until he is proven
innocent, there is going to be the process of a trial. So it's going to be a while until we see him executed. Even after he is sentenced, he can appeal and that can drag things on for years.

24. Um...the law says he's innocent until proven othewise...
Your statement says the opposite. Now, Public opinion says otherwise, but the law is the law is the law. Not that it's ever enforced...

28. I was afraid of this
I just don't understand. What moves a person to just go out one day, snatch a child, and just kill her?

I suppose there was some gruesome motive like sexual assault involved, and then he killed her so she could't identify him.

I agree with those that suggest life in prison is more appropriate for creeps like this. Prison does have a way of dealing with the lowest of the low.
