A serious post from me...and no, I'm not joking

I have been sensing an undercurrent of bad feeling toward me and several others who I speak to openly this lounge, yet I have never understood the cause of these bad feelings.

Today I have found out that for months, I have been spoken about in PM's, even though I have not really PM'ed anyone since I first began speaking in the lounge.

There has been a lot of lounge drama in here lately, and I am certainly not the only player, nor even a major player. There have been several threads posted about this drama, questioning it's source.

Since my name is being mentioned, I feel compelled to offer an explanation in order to defend myself against things that are being said in PM's that are not true. I will only discuss this once in here, but perhaps someone reading this will at least stop and think how they impact people by spreading gossip in PM's. My hope is that by posting this, a lot of the veiled, snarky comments will stop in here, not just to me, but to several others.

Most of you that know me realize that I am always quick to defend myself, and to state what I believe is right. For instance, I was very vocal when I thought an individual was being ganged up on in here, because I feel that no one should be subjected to that kind of treatment, even though they may be wrong-headed.

The following is what is going on in the current lounge drama.

A situation happened in which I was called out in here one night. In addition, a friend was called a name. Both of these situations happened out of the blue, with no provocation. I defended myself in the lounge, and I defended my friend. No big deal, that should have been the end of it.

But it wasn't. Because I demanded an apology in the lounge from this individual, this person became upset. and felt compelled to leave the lounge and come back under a different name. Several people then began talking about me in PM's, saying that I "ran off" this mainly well liked person. That was not the case at all. I believe that when this person originally attacked both myself and my friend, he/she was drunk. This is fine, and both my friend and I simply demanded an apology, but none was ever obtained.

The issue was essentially dropped by us, but not by this person who felt compelled to turn this into a drama by coming back as a sock puppet and speaking about me in PM's to others.

There is another situation happening in the lounge in which an obviously disturbed individual is ripping the shit out of another party for a situation that happened several months ago, but is still being talked about today, even though it was something that should have most certainly been worked out between the two involved parties. I will not comment further on this, since it does not concern me directly.

So, why am I posting all this? In the hope that the snarkiness and the veiled comments in here stop. Please people, take all gossip that you may read in a PM with a grain of salt.

Yeah, the crap around here is tiresome - but it won't change unless people leave or grow up. From what I've seen around here over the years, neither are likely to happen.

If someone has acted like the worlds largest asshole previously - all it takes for me is for them to act differently NOW, and in the future. If someone truly sees the error of their ways and changes I'm not going to beat them up forever over some bullshit that is no longer important. Perhaps that's just me -- forgiveness comes easily. 24. It's in the nature of the internet

that this kind of behavior happens on a lot of boards. I can attest to being the object of sniping on several other boards in the past, several of them general boards, and a couple entertainment boards.

It's just people and personalities not clicking, or sometimes it's people who somehow must discredit someone else for reasons of their own, whether it's an inferiority complex, jealousy or what have you. And because 90% of the time, online makes people bolder because they are relatively anonymous--they don't have to face someone directly.

On one of the times it happened to me, I was furious until someone reminded me of this, and then I decided at that moment in time, calling the other person out was the best plan. So I posted a defense, and suddenly, the attacks stopped. I'm not saying you should do that, but when directly confronted, some bullies or busybodies will stop. And to be honest, I don't spend enough time in the Lounge to even know most people, except for a very few, so I can't comment on the situation, only to let you know that I understand how it happens.

In fact, though, I've been thinking I possess some sort of horrible internet disease myself, since when I do post here in the Lounge on those occasions that I do swing over this way, my posts or replies drop like the iron bull's balls I saw in a post from this morning. What little of an ego I have left can be directly attributable to how unpopular I feel here in the Lounge, and I quietly leave and return to GD where I can pretend I'm wanted around more. :P

however, there comes a time when this lounge drama becomes so overblown and out of control, that you feel compelled to make it stop.

I have found recently that a lot of this PM gossip is being spread to people that I do like, therefore causing them to potentially change their opinion of me, based on false assumptions.

That is why I feel the need to set the record straight.

I also want the drama to stop, again, not just for me, but for everyone....it just gets real old and limits the lounge experience.

and I was partially involved, then I would simply, and with no animosity tell you this: I may have been the one who called you out, but I don't go P.M.ing people and spreading gossip. We had a problem that one night, I said what was on my mind, you said what was on your mind and I let it go at that. More succinctly, I had my say. Whether I'm right or wrong, if something bothers me, then I confront the situation head on, which is what I did. I regret we had it out now. I'm not perfect, but I assure you that I let it go when it happened, which was several months ago.

If you've noticed, I haven't been around much in the lounge since then. I feel that I too have had a real cool reception since then. Maybe it is for other reasons, as well. I can only say that I don't think much of it one way or the other. If I feel like posting, then I post. I can't control whether I get responses or not, or what people say. I sure can't control what they say about me behind my back, but that is something I have never worried about.

The Internet provides the perfect forum for cyberbullies, individuals whose aim is to gain gratification from the distress caused by provoking and tormenting others. The anonymity, ease of provocation, and almost infinite source of targets means the Internet is full of predators from pedophiles targeting children to serial bullies targeting ... anybody.

Cyberbullies get a perverse sense of satisfaction (called gratification) from sending people flame mail and hate mail. Flame mail is an email whose contents are designed to inflame and enrage. Hate mail is hatred (including prejudice, racism, sexism etc) in an email.

Serial bullies, whose behaviour profile you'll find in full at Bully OnLine, harbour a lot of internal aggression which they direct at others. When challenged, the identity of the alleged complainants can't be disclosed because it's "confidential". The purpose of this tactic is to wind people up. Don't be fooled into believing it has any validity - it doesn't.

People who bully are adept at creating conflict between those who would otherwise pool negative information about them. The method of creating conflict is provocation which bullies delight in because they know they can always coerce at least one person to respond in a manner which can then be distorted and used to further flame and inflame people. And so it goes on. The bully then sits back and gains gratification from seeing others engage in destructive behaviour towards each other.

Many serial bullies are also serial attention-seekers. More than anything else they want attention. It doesn't matter what type of attention they get, positive or negative, as long as they can provoke someone into paying them attention. It's like a 2-year-old child throwing a tantrum to get attention from a parent. The best way to treat bullies is to refuse to respond and to refuse to engage them - which they really hate. In other words, do not reply to their postings, and on forums carry on posting without reference to their postings as if they didn't exist. In other words, treat nobodies as nobodies.

Don't get me wrong....I have a very thick skin. I have too much going on in my real life to let this bother me too much. However, this is a place I enjoy posting at, and I want to maintain my good experience here.

This place is crazy, and this crazy place offers a certain freedom of expression on the internet that is rarely found. I want to come here and post crap without getting snarked at. I want no one talking about me in PM, because there is nothing to talk about.

Somehow I've managed to stay below the radar of the Lounge dramas, perhaps because I'm so clueless and unaware I don't realize it's going on until it explodes.

That said, I'd like to add to your post that I really resent the way people's personal disagreements get dragged in here and morph into these threads that, to the clueless and unaware, seem harmless only to discover they're veiled insults and innuendos and the next thing you know, you've inadvertantly "taken a side."

My feeling is that if you take your internet experience so seriously that you carry on vendettas and name-calling PM's, it may be time to visit a health professional and enroll in a 12-step program to beat your addiction.
