What's for dinner Christmas Eve?

I figure most people eat a "traditional" meal Christmas Day, but all bets are off for Christmas Eve. We are having the usual: I am grilling steak at home. It's a tradition. We didn't have much money when I was a kid, so my single Mom would make steak once a year for Christmas Eve dinner. Now I can have steak more often (although I watch the red meat consumption), but Christmas is about traditions, and it's a way to remember Mom. A tasty porterhouse this year is what I'm thinkin'.

she called me yesterday, and told me that the kids loved the mini-burgers i made years ago, so we're making it again. :bounce:

other than that we're having whatever everyone else makes. i know there's chicken wings, and pizza. i could guess at everything else but i don't know for sure.

7. Frozen Indian food

Seriously. With jasmine rice.

Last year we had our hearts set on an Indian buffet and had even called a head to make sure the restaurant was going to be open. Then when we got there we found they had changed their minds and closed shop. Ever try to find someplace to buy food in the Twin Cities after 5:00 PM on Christmas Eve? Even Burger King and McDonalds are closed.

We figured a Chinese restaurant would be a good second choice. We drove around for three hours until we finally found one that was open.

That won't happen again this year. We have frozen Indian food.

they do feed us Christmas night, but not Christmas Eve....sometimes I bring food to work but lately I have been working 14 hour nights so I'd rather sleep than prepare food so chips and ding dongs it is :D

11. We have a traditional ethnic meal.

I used to make bulbulkis (little dough balls in honey and buttered sauerkraut) but the kids never liked them. So now I make pierogies, mushroom-barley soup, biscuits, and some sausage. I still fast on Christmas Eve, the sausage is for the guys. We have our big family dinner on Christmas day.

12. I'm fixing my oldest sons favorite.

He gets in tomorrow afternoon. We're having a spiral ham, cabbage salad, sweet potatoes, and green bean casserole.

On Christmas day we go to my MIL's and we'll be having a buffet of mostly finger foods and pulled pork sandwiches.

19. We'll be at my brother's house and I have no idea what he's making. He's

a vegetarian so I know it will be veggie and I'm sure delicious. He asked me to bring mushroom soup so I am going to make a really good one from scratch. I'll make the broth tonight so it has a chance to really get flavorful, then the soup tomorrow.

20. Thanksgiving redux

Turkey and all the trimmings. I started the tradition last year because except for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, we usually have holiday meals at my mom's or my aunt's house, and as they've gotten older their cooking has gotten far worse. Thus, a turkey dinner memory from Thanksgiving is usually a bad one.

I was kinda surprised how well the turkey et al. came out last year. I hope I don't have a sophomore slump.

Made the squash and cranberries today, and browned the sausage for the stuffing (and I STUFF THE BIRD--I laugh in the face of death! ha HA! :evilgrin:). Tomorrow--bird, bread, potatoes, peas, and chocolate mousse for dessert.

Christmas Eve we shall eat, drink, and be merry, for Christmas Day we get a sad overdone roast at mom's...

24. Working Christmas Eve / Christmas Day :(

I work from 9pm Christmas eve to 6am Christmas day. When I get home, it will just be a quite day alone with a simple meal. BUT - that's not a sad thing! I am going home to see my mother and father for the first time in nearly three years on December 29th! We will have "Christmas" together then.

I've been a little estranged from my parents, namely my mother for a long time. Childhood was, well, no so good. But as adults we are starting to try to mend fences, and I can honestly say I'm happy about going to see them. :)

That and a great big beautiful green salad, because of all the heavier food on Christmas day.

We always have snowballs for dessert on Eve. Roll a scoop of peppermint ice cream in grated coconut for each person, put it on a plate, insert a tiny candle, light and serve with chocolate sauce on the side. Turn down the lights and see if the diner can finish the ice cream before the candle burns out, with the candle remaining upright. Silly, eh?

We always have Christmas crackers with party hats inside, and try to have some fun at the table immediately after dinner.

One year I bought colorful little metal windup hopping birds for each person, and got a ping pong ball, and improvised a little after dinner game where the hopping birds kicked the ball around. That was hilarious.

Another time we played "biscuit hockey" with leftover little biscuits and pencils for hockey sticks.

And I bought rhythm band instruments for everyone (grandpa LOVED having the triangle) and we had concerts to recorded Christmas music. Remember sandpaper blocks? Great fun. People really do appreciate simple things and having children involved gives them permission to engage in whimsical play.

33. We're having our big dinner xmas eve....

making alaskan king crab, corn chowder, goat-cheese and walnut salad, and homemade apple crisp.

and then we decorate the Christmas tree while listening to Christmas music before the kids get ready for bed. And then I read the kids "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and then the wife and I watch the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol" with Alistar Sim before going to bed while munching on the cookies and egg nog the kids put out for Santa. I know we are hopelessly old fashioned!

35. We go to Shapiro's (Kosher) Deli...

in Downtown Indianapolis. It's always a Peppered Beef on their thick cut Dark Rye Bread or a New York Style Corned Beef and cheesecake. We hit the deli before they close at 7pm. Traditionally, they give away huge bags filled with an assortment of bagels from the bakery or loaves of bread right before closing on Christmas Eve. (The sandwiches are so huge we always save half for later.)

After stuffing ourselves we drive to the very center of town... to Monument Circle, grab hot cocoa or coffee, walk around looking at the lights while freezing our butts off or catch a 30 min. carriage ride around town. They string the 284 foot tall monument with lights to look like a giant Christmas Tree. Then at 10 minutes to 8 we head over to hear the bells ring at St. John's and sneak up to the choir loft before early mass lets out to hang out and listen to the pipe organist play rousing Christmas tunes as the church empties. I've even been INSIDE the pipe organ while it's being played. It's fucking awesome!!! After everyone is gone we light candles in one of the side chapels. Then we go home, send everyone to bed after a few rounds of cards, and Mr. Green Meanie & I stuff stockings, while we finish our leftover sandwiches, before hitting the hay ourselves.

The family celebration is tomorrow, with my sister-in-law making my grandmother's recipe for Rouladen: tenderized round steak rolled up around bacon and onion and then stewed for hours until soft. My job is to bring the pies, so rather than risking disaster by trying to bake them myself, I bought the delicious, large, and expensive pies offered by Lund's, one of our local supermarket chains.
