1. My fave is probably 'You Really Got A Hold On Me'
by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Really, all of 'em. You can't go wrong with Motown.

3. "Keeper of the Castle"
The Four Tops-relevant then(1974), relevant now

Live it down
There's a lot of us been pushed around
Red, yellow, black, white and brown
With a tear of their own
Can't you see
While you're pickin' on society
That the leaves on your family tree
Are callin' you to come home.

You're the keeper of the castle
So be a father to your children
The provider of all their daily needs
Like a sovereign lord protector
Be their destiny's director
And they'll do well to follow where you lead.

In your head
You don't believe what the good book said
You're gonna strike out now instead
'Cause the world's been unkind
Through thick and thin
Whatever shape your heart is in
You only have one next of kin
Better keep 'em in mind.

You're the keeper of the castle
So be a good man to your lady
The creator of the sunshine in her day
'Tend the garden that you seeded
Be a friend when a friend is needed
And you won't have to look the other way.

5. Mowtown? You mean Motown, where I was born and raised? My Girl, and Stop In the Name of Love.
Good heavens. I like the post, but "Mowtown" is unacceptable.

9. It's not snarky. We Detroiters are tough. At least spell Motown right.
Is this too much to ask?

10. Probably a "Tears" tie: "Tracks Of My Tears" and "Tears Of A Clown"
"Tracks Of My Tears" because the chorus is just so freakin' brilliant, and "Tears Of A Clown" because of its bassoon use.

Both, of course, most likely featured James Jamerson on bass, who, despite my being a keyboard player, is still a god to me.

14. Marvin Gaye - "What's Going on"
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

my dad was a huge fan, had some .45s - my dad used to put me to sleep with that song. Alas, we lived in Madison the day Otis died.

20. That's tough: I'd have to go with Sam and Dave's "I Thank You."
The guitar riffs were great.

I hum that song a lot when I think about my wife.

It's hard though to count out 'Retha.

When she covered "A Natural Woman," she made Carole King seem silly.

As far as I can tell, she never covered a tune without being better than the original.
