Also, I think they're too busy laughing about the names we give them. Their love is far too unconditional to allow them to get pissed over something as silly as a name: we don't know their REAL names anyway. Ask Old Possum.

He is old and arthritic. When its icy, he slips on the ice. A few nights ago he was pooping and he slipped down while he was pooping and was lying on the ice on top of a pile of fresh hot poop. Didn't get up, didn't bark or whine. Just laid there. Didn't come back, so I had to get dressed and go out and look for him. Nice surprise when I helped him up and got two hands full of poop. He would have frozen to death lying on his poop.

I don't think he has a higher consciousness but he's my best friend and I couldn't love him any more.

He was trying to figure a way outta his predicament without having to embarrass himself further AND get you all messy. Maybe he would have barked when the poop froze a little and wouldn't have been so nasty for you.

All kidding aside, take care of that old boy. You're gonna be here sobbing and asking us for support when his time comes. And I'm gonna be here telling you he is still with you, that the love does't end when the vessel breaks. But, you know that, you love him and his cracked vessel too ;)

I was first told he was going to die in Sept 1999 ... so there's been many brushes with death and much grace. Hes a cancer survivor, bloat survivor... kept in this world by love.

15. Last year, after my (late) dog Roscoe came home from surgery to de-bulk a tumor on his >

spine, I helped him out to the deck to let him sun himself for a bit. To set the scene, he couldn't stand on his hind legs, the deck is two steps up from yard-level, and he was dragging a catheter, so all-in-all he wasn't going far.
I went back inside for a bit to clean up his bedding and when I came back out I saw him hanging over the edge of the deck, his front legs on the deck and his back end draped over the steps. He'd crawled several feet to the edge, got his butt over the side and (as I eventually noticed) had 'pooped' a rather larger pile, which he was sitting in. I assume he was trying to figure out his next move and hadn't yet settled on anything-- the floor was still open for suggestions.

I'll never know whether the poor guy was trying to discretely relieve himself over the edge and lost his balance or whether he just slipped over the edge and literally scared the (poop) out of himself.
