5-Year-Old Saves Mom's Life

LANSING, Ill., Feb. 6, 2004




(CBS) At just 5 years old, Kadasia Hutchinson is responsible for saving her mother's life not just once, but twice, in the last 15 months. Erica Douglas of Lansing, Ill., is a single mother with diabetes who had the foresight to teach her daughter how to dial 911 at the age of 3.

Luckily, Kadasia remembered her lessons and knew how to handle a medical emergency.

Operator: "Does she need to go to the hospital?"
Kadasia: "No! She's-She's a diabetic. I don't want her to go to the hospital because you know why?"

Kadasia: "I have to go to school in the morning."

3. I wonder how many times this will repeat . . .

before they move the child somewhere safer. I know it sounds mean to suggest, but it seems like they are taking some unreasonable risks by repeatedly allowing these (by now predictable?) emergencies to occur.

4. Sounds to me like the kid's got it down pat...

sounds like someone has a case of "won't SOMEONE think of the children!!!"

i really doubt that this kid, who at five is in school (and acts like she looks forward to it), is well-fed and clothed, would be better off in some foster home.
