Actors/actresses you always thought were gay, but weren't

I guess if you are an actor, it's difficult to get certain parts if you are perceived differently. I know a few actors who barely said anything about their private lives, and managed to get diverse parts, while others were/are featured in tabloids frequently who are looked at in such a skewed fashion that trying to play down who they are is nearly impossible.

Tom Cruise is one. Is he gay or straight? Do we know, or care? And what about Richard Gere, who has long fought against a rumor that persists, even if it's only an urban legend? And many believe that John Travolta is gay, but there is nothing that he has said that proves it one way or another.

No, I'm not prejudiced on the subject--as a matter of fact, I very rarely think of an actor's sexual preference, unless I find myself having vivid fantasies about them, and then, and only then, do I want to know if he likes girls or boys. :)

Add your own to the list--it will be interesting to discuss this. A couple of these stories are complete hearsay, but I'm throwing them out there to see if anyone else knows about them.

I always thought Tony Randall was gay--turns out he wasn't. He had a marriage that lasted 50 years (she died) and a second marriage that lasted 9 years (his death). His first marriage yielded no children, but his second marriage yielded two.

Jeremy Brett: I had been told a long time ago that he was gay, but now I'm not so sure. He was married twice--once for 4 years, and the second for 9 years (her death), with three children. He considered his second wife to be the love of his life.

When I first lived in Hollywood in the early 1980s, I had a gay friend who would "name names" that surprised me. One was Charlton Heston. According to this friend, Heston would cruise Sunset Blvd. when his wife was out of town. I don't know if this is true or not.

Another insider gave me a scoop that kind of intrigues me: according to this story, the night that Natalie Wood drowned off the boat she and RJ Wagner owned, the real conflict was that Natalie walked into the room where RJ and Chris Walken were--involved. It angered her and as she was drinking, she evidently stumbled off the boat.

Several of my friends whom I thought to be sensitive, thoughtful men, and snappy dressers, turned out to be gay and I had no clue.

Some of my female friends had to point it out to me.

Even then, knowing this, I would look at them and say...

My youngest brother turned out to be gay; I had no clue. My mother was mortified; did not know how to broach the subject with me...
