1. On a residential (non-corporate) plan it's usually impossible.
You would have to end your old contract (penalties may apply) and start a new contract with a new number.

However, if the penalty isn't a problem, you can buy a new number and be up and running quickly. You don't even need a new phone. If you're using anyone except Verizon Wireless you can simply buy a new SIM card and put in it your current phone. No loss of contact information.

If you use Verizon wireless then they need to program the new number onto your phone (which they do remotely) and again you do not lose any of the contacts stored on the phone.

You would definitely lose any voicemail messages you have stored, because you would get a new voicemail box tied to the new number.
