I took history of Modern Ireland last semester. My prof. (Irish as all hell...we mostly talked about Guinness) liked to point out that the British always knew when the Irish were planning something big, because they would stop drinking (or at least as much as the Irish standard calls for).

What a nasty thing to say - isn't the lounge an open forum to say what we want?
I see many things out there I don't like or care to participate in but I wouldn't post something cruel to hurt their feelings.

but I will take your word no offense intended. I guess such things are a little "close to the bone" for me as my parents were subjected to those "Irish need not apply" ads when they first emigrated. As a result, my dad had to take work that was far beneath his skill level in order to support a family. I know this isn't an unusual story for immigrants but I do tend to be a little defensive on the subject. Sometimes it seems like the Irish are the only ethnic group left that its "ok" to mock and deride with all the drunken "jokes" etc. In fact if you look up "Irish jokes" on the net -that's all you will find are stupid stereotypical "Pat and Mike" jokes. Not funny.

Americans think they know and understand the Irish. But Irish know what Canadians know: Americans are clueless.

Lesson One: Ireland is a foreign country. Americans traveling to Ireland expect the natives to conform to American expectations. The people in the tourist hotels oblige them.

Only in bed and breakfasts and I have been treated like a member of the family. Where else did I learn to appreciate the warmth of a turf fire? It was especially nice in the days when even Dublin had no central heating.

And on edit: Tea with the family I was staying with was a special experience. And I know of no relatives of mine there, sorry to say. That would have made my trips there even better.

I've never stayed in any hotel on my many trips to Ireland. My husband and myself are fortunate enough to own a house in his hometown in Co. Down and I never expected our family or neighbors to conform to "American expectations". BTW, what exactly are "American expectations".

Many of us visit our relatives when we go over,rather than tourist hotels. Also a great many Irish people are well-traveled,and they know that Americans,like the Irish,come in many forms and varieties. I would agree that too many Americans traveling ANYWHERE expect the natives to conform to their expectations. This is not unique to Ireland.

Lesson Two:
In my many visits to Ireland,I've never heard anyone use the word "begorrah"....that's plastic paddy,stage-Irish stuff.
Also,since you have an American flag avatar,perhaps by "clueless Americans" you were referring to yourself? If so,you have my sympathies:)

I'm American but I'm not clueless. I have Irish citizenship because my father was a native. When I visited Ireland I was impressed at my cultural fluency. However, the new generation of Irish is strange to me. In fact I think they are strange to the old generation of Irish. That music, for instance . . .
