53. I lived there in the early '80's...
I loved that city and the people of that city. I'm sure it's changed a lot but I have so many good memories of Philly. The bars by the University of Penn campus: Smokey Joe's and Doc Watson's. The Khyber Pass, The Eastside Club, shopping at Zipperhead's. Oregon Steaks. The Sixer's with Moses Malone and Doctor J. Watching Lefty Carlton pitch.

But, mostly, the people. They made me feel at home.

St. Petersburg, Russia is gorgeous. Moscow has turned in to a crowded noisy wreck. And Helsinki, Finland is a neat city, too.

But of what you've listed, I'd say London. That's without having ever been to Paris, though.

22. I'd have to go with Nice, France
if you can consider a metropolitan area of about half a million a city. Nice is one of the most visually stunning places I've ever seen, especially the long palm-lined drive in front of old hotels on the Bay of Angels and the old town section with its narrow streets and picturesque market places. The light under that Mediterranean sun is special, where objects just seem clearer and in better focus. The light has something amazing about it, about the same difference as between watching regular TV and High definition TV. The sea is a beautiful light aqua marine and the weather is wonderful, a micro-climate where it's almost always sunny and bright.

34. Another place that impressed me was Valencia, Spain
When I was about 16 years old in the mid 1960s, I sailed on a cargo ship from Georgia to Europe and I visited several cities: Lisbon, Barcelona, Marseille. All of them had their unique charm, but Valencia stood out. It was smaller than those large cities and had a homey charm. It was a very old and beautiful Mediterranean port city. And when I visited the place, Generalisso Franco had just ordered all of the old stone buildings of the city to be sandblasted. The old stone gleamed a bright white in the Mediterranean sun. I've never quite seen anything like it.

63. I spent a year there in the 1960s
Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 04:13 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
My dad was in the Air Force and they paid for one year of his continuing college education at the University of Arkansas. I was in my early teens and went to Hillcrest Junior High School (one of only two Junior Highs in the entire area at the time). It was a real small place back then, with only one small commercial center and one movie theater, with probably fewer than 20,000 living in the greater Fayetteville area. I remember the drive from Fayetteville down the Ozark mountains to Fort Smith as being very scenic.

I was into spelunking back then in a big way and my friends and I did a lot of hiking and cave exploring in the countryside, from Bentonville (before WalMart), to Rogers, to Bella Vista, to Siloam Springs to the west and to Eureka Springs to the east. It was beautiful and very wild with lots of primitive woodlands, hills, and hollows. You could hike for hours and see no one and suddenly come up on a small pig farm. There was some breakthtaking Ozark mountain scenery. Now I understand that it's virtually all one continuous series of homes and strip malls from Fayetteville up to the Missouri border. It's really a shame, as that northwestern part of Arkansas used to be just amazing for its natural and unspoiled beauty. One thing I hated, though, was that every time I went hiking in summer time, especially across open fields, I picked up dozens of ticks on my pants.

57. I happen to like the Twin Cities
Big enough to have everything you need, small enough to actually be able to get to it without much of a problem.

Of course, I'm boring. I'm a native suburban dweller stay-at-home, so the diversity and excitement of a major city is generally lost on me.

Chicago has the great architecture, though. I took one of those river tours last spring.... oh, man...

And Lake Michigan is beautiful!

London, I normally would have chosen here, but I don't know; now it wouldn't even be my first choice in England (Bath, Canterbury, somewhere in Cornwall, instead).

New York---Was just there last week (I live fairly close). It IS awesome, but man, the pavement gets awfully hard awfully fast, with nowhere to sit! And it's goods, not buildings, that catch one's eye.

So my winner is PARIS! Beautiful in every way.
