Just in time for New Year's! This case of domestic sparkling wine was originally intended for the use of the surviving members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins football team, the first in NFL history to go undefeated (14-0, at that time) through its regular season. Each year since, the team members have gathered to watch as the last remaining undefeated team lost a game, at which point they have popped the corks on that year's case.
This year, however, the tradition was brought to an end when the New England Patriots -- the Dolphins' bitter AFC East rivals since the NFL-AFL merger -- defeated the New York Giants 38-35 at East Rutherford, N.J., completing a perfect 16-0 season. The '72 Dolphins, having no further use for the case, decided to list it for sale here, rather than pour it into the nearest storm drain, where it might have harmed fragile South Florida marine life.
