Is it wrong to favor cheap wine over the expensive stuff?
 :P  I had a glass of Barefoot Vineyards White Zinfandel last night, and it was really good. I'm no wine connoisseur, but I know what I like. This stuff is like $4.99 a bottle. Hey, at least it's not Mad Dog or Richard's Wild Irish Rose...

1. Two Buck Chuck is pretty highly rated in spite of the price.
So no, it's not wrong.

3. I'm a wine drinker, and the only wine I consider to be blasphemy is the kind that comes in boxes.
Of course, I'm a POOR wine drinker, so that might be why I'm okay with the cheap stuff... :P

6. Have you tried the Australian boxed stuff?
(cough, cough) it's not too bad. And it keeps well because no air gets to the wine. The bladder in the box collapses and so there's no contact.

12. Still, if there's any kind of plastic involved that can mess with the flavor a bit.
I'd prefer my wines to be in glass.

Especially when I'm trying to brew my own. :P Brewing in plastic is a big no-no.

14. There is that -
But when we visit wineries in France and Italy they sell their wine in bulk. And folks show up with plastic jugs.

I'd serve boxed wine at a party, to my wife's family.

29. I tell you what...I spent a weekend at a rustic cabin in the northern MN woods. Boxed wine
was fantastic in that venue!

Sounds funny, but we chilled a box and drank all weekend long. *hic*

39. America is the only country where people look down on boxed wine
Europeans will just laugh at you for that.

I'm a new convert. There are some excellent premium boxed wines you should check out like Black Box or Wine Cube. They are actually bag in a box. It won't oxidize because air never gets into the wine. But yeah, since it comes in a box, some Americans tend to associate it with the nasty shit that comes in a box without the bag (or a spigot). That's unfortunate, but I see it as their loss. I'm also an avid supporter of artificial corks and screw tops over real wooden corks. And I support stem-less wine glasses and holding stemmed glasses by the bowl not the stem.

Think outside the bottle. You can get 3 liters for under $20 and it fits nicely in your fridge. I recommend the Black Box Chardonnay.

5. I've been drinking under $10 bottles for awhile now
We were both in the restaurant trade and used to get some pretty high end wine - still do when we feel like feeling a little special.

The real trick is finding well made, small producer wines that are shipped properly. If it's not shipped and stored properly it doesn't matter what you pay, it's going to taste like rubbish.

Our favorites right now are a syrah from a Cote de Rhone coop at 7.99/btl, a white Picpoul from the Languedoc and a rosé from Nimes. We do change it around though, because you get tired of the same stuff after awhile.

7. I was going to say...
as long as it's not white zin. But seriously, though I personally think white zin is an abomination, the only real rule for wine is to drink what you like. Price doesn't always equal quality. There are some great mid-range wines out there. The best way to learn about wine is to enjoy it and don't listen to the wine snobs...even me!

8. NO WAY
Back when I was a drinker, I always preferred the good cheap stuff to the good expensive stuff. IIRC, I really liked Spanish wine because it was really good and pretty cheap when compared to other Euro-type wines.

I was never a connoisseur, but I too knew what I liked. CHEAP.

11. Hey, if you like it, that's the only requirement, as far as I'm concerned.
I usually buy my wine in the supermarket, and I once had a $7.99 bottle of Chianti that was light-years better than a bottle selling for $12.99. I also buy wine, beer and spirits in a local specialty shop (support local businesses! :-) ) and the product is uniformly excellent. But the prices are higher than the supermarket, natch.

Hi, NWC! :hi: :hug::loveya:

13. go to Europe and be prepared to be laughed at for shelling out the big $$ for wine
Plus, I have yet to go to a wine tasting party where the "cheap" wine ($5-15) didn't beat out the expensive bottles.

Having said that, some of the expensive stuff is great for celebrations (Silver Oak!) but for everyday enjoyment, there's no reason to spend over $15 IMO.

Enjoy your wine and be brazen about it. ;)

20. It's only wrong to favor bad tasting wine over good wine. Price is irrelevant.
Save the pricey stuff for special occasions.

I strive to never casually drink a bottle that cost more than $10.

22. Barefoot is pretty consistant in its' decentness.
I can deal with their reds pretty well too. And I am a $10-to-$16 a bottle type person, usually.
May I also suggest Twin Fin (has a car on the label). I think they are around 6.99 -7.99 at Food Lion, if your closest one carries it.

Yellowtail, Bogle and Ravenwood are all very good for the price, but you get the occasional bad bottle.

25. If we've learned anything from the Olive Garden arguments...
No. It's not okay to like what you like. You have to like the authentic stuff, which is probably more expensive. If you don't, you probably want to invade Iran and take away health care for children.

I, on the other hand, say screw that. Drink whatever the hell you like.

Wine is very easy to "understand".

Drink it. Like it? Buy more.
Don't like it? Buy something else. Drink that. Like it? Buy more.

Lather rinse repeat.

28. It's wrong to favor bad wine over good wine -- forget price
Price is very little indication.

So how do you tell good wine from bad? You enjoy drinking good wine, and don't like drinking bad wine.

(OK, I do believe in educating your palate -- and it will probably broaden the wines you like -- but really, the whole point is to enjoy yourself.)

My three favorite wines ever are $9/bottle, $1.25/bottle, and something cheap (and French, in a weird-shaped bottle) that we had in Athens...

Damn, I wish I could find that last wine again. Anyone know a french sommalier i could consult with?

31. One of my favorite wines is Barefoot sauvignon blanc, but I think what
makes it my favorite is that it is reasonably good, not great, but at a GREAT price. I had two-buck Chuck last night for the first time and couldn't even finish a glass.

Basically, I really love a good wine, but am capable of liking one that's less than spectacular, too. Why the heck not?

Personally, I can't stand white zin, it is like soda pop to me. If you enjoy it, great.

Advice: don't develop a taste for the better stuff, it will save you a lot of money. It is hard to get an interesting wine for under $10, depending on the varietal. White zin is a cheaper varietal, for instance. I have no idea why.

34. Just because a wine is expensive doesn't mean it's good.
And quite frankly, just because it's 'affordable' doesn't mean it's crap. I read with amusement that at a recent blind tasting a group of wine connoisseurs awarded top honors to Trader Joe's 2 Buck Chuck over a host of fine and pricey wines.

And, too, not all wines age well. Not all aged wines have been stored properly. Many fine, and quite pricey wines were never meant for simple sipping but require complimentary foods to develop their flavours.

Drink what you like. Life is too short for snobbery.

My favorite white is $4/bottle. It's some Rhine-type from Oregon or Washington, and the Grocery Outlet always has it. Nice and cold, it tastes like fresh cut grass and iced spring water served in a stoneware mug. I try to always have a couple of bottles in the house.
