Fer fuck's sake, now they think they need to redo Day the Earth Stood Still. Yeah, cuz the first one was done so fucking poorly. For Christ's sake, there's not even a car chase in it! And it's in black and white! And sometimes the film goes for more than 0.3 seconds without an edit and camera angle change!! :eyes:

Asswipes.

Leave the classics alone. I'm getting tired of uncreative shitwits constantly redoing movies that were perfectly done the first time. DO YOUR OWN &#(&%#&$ MOVIES, YOU CLUELESS ASSCLOWNS!!!!!!

...is screaming "I have no creativity!" from the rooftops. Remakes, sequels, prequels: just the same tired reheated hash over and over. Even supposedly original movies tell the same old story with (occasionally) different actors, costumes and sets. Plot twists you can see coming before you sit down in the theater; "surprise" endings that are anything but; "romantic" subplots clumsily shoehorned into thrillers ("to appeal to the girlies"); loyalty/betrayal/revenge themes that were cliched when Beowulf was a nipper; soundtracks so overproduced that even the most obtuse popcorn-gobbler will understand something "important" is happening; actors who all look the same and have the dramatic range of a teletubbie; budgets that could cure cancer wasted on CGI effects that do nothing but scream "look! Shiny things!"

There hasn't been a "blockbuster" made in the last decade that's been more memorable than a Big Mac.

I simply can't wait to see "The Day, like, the Earth, ya know, Stood Still, n' Stuff" with the Greatest Actor of His Generation, Mr. Ted "Theodore" Logan. blech.

Otherwise the other stuff is on point

That one was just plain fake. And boring.

And no CGI anywhere. How is that a movie? :eyes:

9. It's not arrogance or anything...
It's an attempt to bank off of the name of an already well known film. The name recognition already exists, so people will notice the advertising more and go out and pay $10 a douchebag to see it.

14. exactly. it's all about $$$
I find most mainstream hollyweird films excruciatingly boring. noise and s/x don't do anything for me. The Sopranos was better than anything done with a budget of 80 mil for the big screen. And, yes, I think it is profane that so much money is spent on crap. I also think it's rather disgusting that LA has such rotten ghettos, considering how much money some people make who live there.

sometime when I plastered I'll tell some stories about that part of the world, from my brief experience.

10. In fairness...
The 50's version of The Day the Earth Stood Still is based on a short story, so it can't really be praised for its originality, either (classic though it is).

I'm equally worried about the choice of director; The Exorcism of Emily Rose was super-lame...

15. Speaking of the short story and Spoiler Alert
if you haven't read it.

The screen play could go back to the original. Gort and his(its) kind were the controlling entities, not Klaatu. He was merely the mouthpiece. That could make a darker story. Otherwise, redoing TDTESS is waste of time. We already have a near perfect film.

What I don't understand is there are some great SF stories out there still to film; some of Clarke's for example. Now that we have the special effects, The City and the Stars or Childhood's End would make mind blowing films, if you had the cast and crew to do them credit.

There's the truly ultimate tragedy of the Overlords (always the bridesmaids, so to speak), and the idea of a literally singleminded human race appalls me, even with the tradeoff of joining the galactic consciousness.

OTOH, it would sort of be the ultimate achievement of any species to join, even if the individual is lost in the process.

Gosh gosh gosh, I just can't decide.

Another classic I'd like to see done well is Alfred Bester's The Stars, My Destination. Great political story and the CGI would be wonderful. My choice for Gully Foyle and no substitute accepted - Ray Stevenson. Well, maybe Sean Bean.

34. Producers don't want to risk their money investing in original creative ideas
At least many of them don't. They prefer to make movies where there might already be a built in audience, such as comic books, TV show remakes, or remakes of classics that have a familiar name. If they could make money showing people all in a row defecating, they'd make a movie out of that too. I worked for a major Hollywood producer back in the 1980s. The old adage about Hollywood is true, it runs on fear and greed. And the other saying about it being showBUSINESS, with the emphasis on "business" is also true.

38. There is one good thing about it though
The remakes tend to make younger audiences aware that, yes, there were movies that were made before they were born, and, many of them were pretty damn good. I heard a young, blond teeny bopper the other day who looked like Brittney Spears and was clearly a product of the Paris Hilton diva generation complain about Poltergeist being too old for her when she was looking for scary movies to watch. Poltergeist? That movie was made in 1982. It had special effects that blow most of today's CGI crap out of the water because it was made by artists who cared about their work, not lazy bill pushers who took the easy way out by drawing something on a computer. Not to mention it was intelligently written, thought-provoking, and featured characters you actually cared about instead of obnoxious teenagers who you just couldn't wait to be killed so they would shut up.

I agree that there are way too many remakes and not enough original stuff coming out of Hollywood. But these days, sometimes it seems like that's the only way you're going to get the younglings acquainted with the classics.

44. 3:10 To Yuma
The original Glenn Ford / Van Heflin classic from 1957.

It's one of those movies that will always be in the shadow of "High Noon," but it was a classic. The cool, unapologetic badness of Ford. The reluctant heroism of Heflin. Some jaw-dropping scenery shots. All in all a movie that had NO NEED WHATSOEVER for a remake.

And they did a remake. Go figure.

I remember Saturday Night Live a few years back, when David Spade was a regular. At the time the music industry was going through a particularly uninspired stretch. The offering of the day was tribute albums...lots and lots of tribute albums. By the time the talent pool was whittled down to the third-string and unknown bands, Spade did a little rant about it on SNL.

"Do you know why the Beatles recorded those songs in the first place?"

"SO YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO.

56. Could I add a special note of condemnation for
1) Making feature films out of boomer TV programs like Leave It To Beaver, The Avengers, and The Flintstones? Dogs, all fo them.

2) The very idea of remaking The Haunting and completely missing the point of it (i.e. that the movie creates an atmosphere of horror without actually showing anything--take THAT, Blair Witch Project.)

3) Remaking perfectly good foreign films (and dumbing them down), perhaps on the theory that Americans, unlike all other people in the world, can't read subtitles?

60. You'd be surprised (maybe not) at how many Americans
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 10:28 PM by Downtown Hound
either can't read subtitles or simply refuse to. I spent three years slinging popcorn at a movie theater when I was in college, and we once had the movie, "Men with Guns." In case you aren't familiar, it's a Latin American movie about the turmoil that all the wars and revolutions in that region have caused. It's quite powerful and very well done. Many times I'd watch joe six pack with a gut going down to his knees go into that movie thinking they were going watch the latest Hollywood action movie based on the name alone. Within ten minutes at the most, they'd come out, start waving their hands around and be all like, "What's this crap? Why are you guys showing this crap? Are there subtitles all the way through? Is there any action later on? Any fights or anything like that?"

And we wonder how Americans can be so easily duped. Any population where "Nascar Dads" becomes a household term in politics has serious critical thinking issues.

Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 10:27 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
and it's one that the NASCAR dads should have seen, because everything in that film (except for the fantasy parts, of course) was based on something that really happened during Reagan's war on the poor people of Central America. (By the way, Men with Guns is not a Latin American movie, even though it was filmed in Latin America and in Spanish. It was written and directed by John Sayles.)

The problem is our stupid macho culture. Our commercial culture teaches boys that they have to be "real men" and that the only fit interests for "real men" are work, sports, drinking, sex, building projects, war, hunting, cars, and fishing.

One of the things I'd do if I were redesigning the U.S. educational system would be to include age-appropriate foreign films in the curriculum--WITH subtitles, not dubbed. And I wouldn't Americanize the language in books such as the Harry Potter series.

If we can't get over this national delusion about America deserving to be Lord of the Universe, we're doomed, and broadening the average citizen's mind to appreciate that other countries have their good points would be a good start.

64. And the Dorito-shoving American asswipes who want fullscreen so they can get the WHOLE picture,
and not "have the tops and bottoms cut off". We've had a lot of great posts from video store workers here on DU about the dumbasses who return movies because of the tops and bottoms being cut off.

:eyes:

My sister's family, except the educated daughter, refuse to watch widescreen movies (because they want the WHOLE picture, dammit!, no matter how many times I explain it to them) or movies with subtitles - not because they can't read, but because they feel that they shouldn't have to "work" while watching a movie - someone should go to the effort to do it in English for them. They're progressive politically, but absolutely not culturally or intellectually. And I'd say they are a pretty fair representation of the majority of Americans. Probably even a bit smarter.

:eyes:

Of course, they also tend not to care for English-language movies that might require paying attention because of complex plot lines or philosophical content because you should be able to hold a conversation during the movie and do other things and not have to "work" because its entertainment.

66. The anti-widescreen ignorance is one of my pet peeves, too.

70. Well, I prefer widescreen, but I must admit that fullscreen was easier to make out on

65. A tangential point to your post.
American moviegoers tend to shy away from any type of sexuality not draped in a PG-13 coating.

I remember watching The Cooler (good movie), which featured a scene of William H. Macy and Maria Bello laying naked in bed after sex. Of course, to avoid the NC-17 rating, the filmmakers couldn't actually show genitalia, so the camera panned down and showed the two covering it up.

Apparently, even that was too much for the two women next to me, who proceeded to shout, "Eww!" This despite the fact that it was a 70-something woman and her middle-aged daughter who didn't realize that's how they came into existence.

68. I imagine that everyone who has posted in this thread...
has at least three or four good movie ideas that would make a huge amount of money. I know I do. But what's the point of taking the time to write the scripts?

69. Funny you should say that, I have a sequel to "Scent of A Woman"
that I wrote and am too afraid of the rejection that is bound to come. Danny Devito used to cut my hair back in the day in Asbury Park and I'm tempted to send it to Jersey Productions. Think I'll wait, Al would probably hate it too.

71. I, for one, welcome our new brain dead overlords.
Lord Keanu will rule with the dispassionate, dead pan delivery we've all been missing.

The original of that movie was TERRIBLE! I'm suprised anyone even thought to remake it considering how bad it was...sheesh...
