So what is this Black-eyed Peas & Cabbage thing for New Year's?
I've heard of the Black-eyes Peas brining good financial luck in the coming year. But someone today told me that you need to have cabbage too. Which is it?

1. My Dad had to have black eyed peas every New Year's
He'd frankly get upset if someone forgot to buy some and he'd have to run out to the 7-11. But I never heard about the cabbage.

2. Maybe it's a Texas thing.
This person I was referring to is from Texas and told me about the cabbage. I remember hearing about Hopp'n John on New Year's Day to bring good luck with money.

5. My father was from Arkansas
He seemed to genuinely believe that he wouldn't make money in the coming year unless he had him some black-eyed peas.

3. Hoppin' John for good luck, collards for money
Or to demonstrate that you're so superstitious that you'll eat not one but two awful tasting things once a year in hopes of improving your life. http://southernfood.about.com/od/blackeyedpeas/r/bl80308c.htm

4. No cabbage, collards are the thing.
Hoppin' John and collard greens. That's the ticket.
It represents prosperity - the greens are the paper money and
the peas are the coins. ;)

11. My family always has black-eyed peas and cabbage
Peas are for luck and cabbage for money.

http://www.topics-mag.com/internatl/holidays/new-year/customs/black-eyed-peas.htm
"A traditional New Year's Day meal throughout the South
This custom is traditional throughout the southern part of the United States. There are some variations; for example, in Texas and in Alabama, cabbage sometimes accompanies the black-eyed peas instead of turnip greens. The black-eyed peas are considered a symbol of good luck; and the cabbage, like the turnip greens, is considered a symbol of money. The cabbage can be prepared in any form; it is sometimes cooked and sometimes served as cole slaw—a salad made with thinly cut, uncooked cabbage."

because my mom liked slaw with any kind of dried beans.

Tomorrow we are having fresh blackeyed peas with crispy cornbread.

24. Never heard of such a thing until I was in the South.
Then again I grew up with your basic meat'n potatoes type of cuisine, typical in NE Iowa.
